Say what you will about SNL

Tonight's musical guest is Alabama Shakes and that's A-OK by me.

Yeah yeah yeah, SNL was better 40, 30 20, 10, 5 years ago. But Alabama Shakes is on tonight and that's all that matters.

And it was kinda fun seeing Don and Melanie in the audience for their kid.

The lead singer is A M A Z I N G! Her facial expressions are the best accompanyment for the musical instrument that is her voice. I can't take my eyes off her when she performs.

3. I saw Alabama Shakes about 3-4 years ago here in Delaware

We have the Queen here in Wilmington, part of WXPN public radio out of UPenn. So we get some great shows in the city. That were the opening act for North Mississippi All-Stars and this is before anyone heard of Alabama Shakes. We absolutely loved them even met lead singer Brittney Howard after her set when they were selling CDs. Nicest person she was!

And now they have been on SNL twice - so cool

I'm tracking them on SongKick so I will get alerted if they play around here. I love watching Brittney sing. She looks like she means it. And hearing her ain't too shabby either.

It's scary because those women all start to look alike - her, Goldie Hawn, Madonna, Meg Ryan. It's like the faces that made them famous were carved away to give them the 'Real Housewife' look. Nicole Kidman is starting to head down that path.

And it is bullshit to say that Hollywood doesn't give them any option. Look at Julianne Moore. Sure she might have a few tiny crows feet around her eyes and her lips aren't as plump as 20 year old starlet. But she looked absolutely stunning on Oscar night when she won her award - you could tell she isn't touching her face other than with moisturizer and avoiding the sun. And her fan is still stunningly beautiful for someone in her mid-50s!

Last nights show displayed renewed enthusiasm following the SNL40 celebration.
And Alabama Shakes was the first great band of the season.

10. I love it when they get real talent on the show

I guess they need to bring in these flash-in-the-pants actors and singers to get the young kids tuning in but usually the show has subpar sketches because the talent really can't act or the music talent really can't perform well on a small live stage.

Two weeks ago they had JK Simmons (recent Best Supporting Actor Oscar winner and long time actor who has been in everything) and I thought he did an amazing job. But I watched a few of the skits with Dakota Johnson and she fell kinda flat - she would have not gotten that spot if she hadn't been in that one big movie, might be her only time.

Other times it was funny was when they brought in folks like Edward Burns and Christoph Waltz (the real one not the great imitation done by Tarrem Killum). Sarah Silverman was one of the better female guests lately.

As for musical acts, bands like Alabama Shakes are perfect for the SNL set but they don't have the kid appeal as putting in there Katy Perry or One Direction.

Go figure.

12 year old girls should't even be up watching SNL. (at least, not when SNL is really on. SNL should be an adult show) (I hypocritically say this as I remember sneaking to watch Akroyd and Belushi as a 13~14 year old. And it was real danger too because I would have gotten an ass-beating if caught by my step-father. Luckily he slept heavily)

I don't care for much of the modern pop or hip-pop either so a decent musical guest is an oasis in the sea of bleah.

Alabama Shakes made me forget a bunch of musical crap though so I can power through the next wave of fast forwarding. (I like to watch SNL as it airs but I always wait about 10 minutes JUST so I can fast forward though the musical guests. I give them about 30 seconds if I have never heard of them and if they hook me I'll stay - or go to the bathroom. If I know I don't like them I'm on the button immediately)

15. I am not sure what you refer to as 'real talent"
Sun Mar 1, 2015, 02:31 PM
Mar 2015

really is 'talent'. The main criticism of SNL is that they have bowed to the 'pop' culture and will always welcome the 'star de jour' depending on what is tracking with the twitterati.
The best days, and the initial impetus, were when they showcased the alternative talent pool. Comedians and musicians who were not part of the main stream 'pop' culture are who made SNL the institution it is today. The downfall has been the acquiescence to the culture of fame and fortune.

The ISIS commercial, Worf, M.D., and Say What You Want to Say.

I've seen every episode of SNL since the first broadcast. If I get one good laugh out of it, it was worth my time. Last night I had three. I'm a satisfied viewer.

from Weekend Update. If I get any from the rest of the show that's gravy. I do miss Tina Fey and Amy Poehler though. They were easily the best in a long time. The new guys are doing pretty good though...I can see them getting getting even better.

17. It was good almost all the way. Dakota is goofy/funny despite being panned. SPOILER clips

Anyway, the first one with Dakota doing the introductory monolog as host is funny, her being sort of ditzy/goofy LIKE HER MOTHER, then with her REAL PARENTS in the audience. I didn’t think it was really them.

The #4 video about explaining “net neutrality” is fairly funny all the way but at the end has a hilarious line, where the inventor of the internet slaps each one of the nutty panelists for being stupid. Dakota has a HILARIOUS one-word, I literally laughed OUT LOUD.

The news people are saying she is a flop, but I’ve seen her here and with LETTERMAN and she’s goofy/FUNNY! Last week, Kathy Lee had the usual catty assessment after they ran a clip of her, "Well, she MODULATED more this time. Usually she's just got a monotone" (paraphrase).

The Ruth Bader GINSBURG was hilarious. So were the two dudes doing the Update, showing some relaxation and chemistry for a change.
