National Human Trafficking Awareness Day January 11 has been designated by President Obama as National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. In commemoration of this day in Vermont, a resolution will be introduced on the House and Senate floors of the State Legislature by Sen. Dick Sears and Rep. Kesha Ram, as well as in the Legislative Council.

Human trafficking is the second-largest criminal industry in the world. The number of human beings estimated to be enslaved today has reached over 27 million worldwide, the highest in recorded history. The number of prostituted children who are United States' citizens has been estimated at between 100,000 and 300, Human trafficking is the second-largest and fastest-growing criminal industry in the world today.

Bleak as this sounds, great strides are being made internationally and nationally. Vermont's new anti-trafficking legislation has resulted in new partnerships, a round of trainings, a tri-state training conference, and the development of a statewide human trafficking protocol for law enforcement and service providers. The Polaris Project has given Vermont's law (Act 55) its highest rating for its strong anti-trafficking legal framework.
