(6,719 posts)And what a happy dog. She is grateful for a real home. Give her a welcome scratch for me. Some names are Snowball, Gracie, Gemma (the middle star in the constellation we call the Northern Crown), Scamper (if she is active and runs around a lot), Christmas (or Christi for short). I kind of like the suggestion in an earlier post for the Inuit name. Have fun with names and have fun with this nice addition to your lives.

Here she is resting by the vent--her favorite spot after a walk in the summer! Hope you find a perfect name for the new pup!

Or as I call her 'El loco blanco perro' sometimes. She's the crazy white dog.

(14,881 posts)The person who originally rescued him from a sooty basement discovered his daughter was allergic, so I rescued Bennie and his rescuer.
He had named him Barnie. He left us alone for a few minutes while he went off to answer the phone or something. I sat looking at him and talking quietly to him, calling him Barnie over an dover. I got no response.
So I decided to try calling him Bennie, since he was starting a new life in a forever home. The 2nd or third time I said "Bennie," his eyes lit up and he turned and looked at me.
So Bennie stuck.
So go with your gut, but maybe try the name out a few times and see if she responds. Maybe she'll tell you what her name is
And Happy Christmas! A rescue furbaby is a wonderful way to celebrate Christmas! Both my shelter pups were Christmas pups!

my last two furkids were rescued but the shelters knew their names. this one was a runaway i guess so the rescue place just made up a name for her

and a million guesses of what her real name is didn't turn her head, perk her ears, get her to come running. (okay--not really a million, but a LOT of guesses)

Because American Eskimo dogs, as your link says, are a Spitz dog from Germany, and my old friend from Germany is named Ursula ,
and Polaris, the North Star, is located in the constellation of Ursa Minor, the Little Bear. It sometimes also goes by the name Stella Polaris.
So Ursula, (Ursi), Stella, or Polly (short for Polaris)

(205,664 posts)I adopted her from rescue. She was found on the streets of Cleveland, was brought to a kill shelter by a good samaritan and she was such a nice dog that she was included at the last minute in a doggie "underground railroad" run to rescue groups in New York and Vermont where we have tougher animal protection laws. Her paperwork said "Cindy," but that was obviously not her name. So I kept trying names until I happened on "Sara" (my cat was Rhiannon, after another Stevie Nicks song ), and when I called "Sara," she ran across the room, jumped into my lap and licked my face. I knew I'd found her name...
Sara:

(6,011 posts)She looks soft-wiry coated, do you know what combination of breeds she is?
Our rescued Border Collie-Heeler went from "Freckles" to "Sally" and seemed to like her new name. She was named after an animal advocate cousin of my mom, Sarah, whose nickname was Sally.
Rhiannon12866
(205,664 posts)And when I agreed to adopt Sara, I was told she was a male Cairn Terrier. Somebody wasn't paying attention! She was obviously a terrier mix, but her legs were fairly short, so the vet said he was sure there was some Basset in there, that he knew another dog very like her.
Dogs really do get attached to their names. The dog I adopted previously, Sara's tiny friend, was a 9-year-old Brussels Griffon. His elderly owner had died and the guy who adopted him didn't want to keep him, actually had threatened to have him euthanized, so I met him and picked up the dog ASAP. I already knew his name was Meneken, through my friend in rescue, and he responded to it immediately. The guy who had had him had called him Bill. No wonder they didn't get along.

(34,067 posts)my daughter had her at her apartment for a few days before she brought her over on christmas eve and wasn't crazy about the names given to her by the rescue family (marshmallow and fluffy) so my kid started calling the dog lola.
but she was only "lola" for a few days so my daughter said i should name her whatever i wanted (she was only marshmallow & fluffy for two weeks). so....
we did a brainstorming session and came up with a lot of hysterical crap
my daughter got lola from the kinks song ("l-o-l-a, lola" and i had to point out that the lola in that song was a guy! (my daughter isn't that familiar with the song apparently) but when i heard "lola" i thought of the Copacabana song ("she was a showgirl"
so after they went home i thought of a few names: "christmas," "christmas eve," "noel," and maybe "aspen" but none seemed to work or seemed right. she was very shy & easily spooked so i considered spooky. she's light as a feather so i considered feather & wispy (but they both just sound too funny/stupid--they'll make perfect nicknames for her though). i considered ivy & winter
then i posted this thread
the next morning she kinda freaked out when i tried to put her harness on to go outside--looking at me all wild-eyed, & hopping backwards, wondering who the fu*k i was.....so wylie coyote came to mind. she reminds me of an artic fox (so, of course, "foxy" came to mind)
i like a lot of the names on this thread. creamsicle & eggnog made me lol! so did "privilege." i liked willow because, like i said, she's wispy.
but in all my indecision i realized i was calling her "hey you" & thought that's not good; she'll get used to that. so i fell back on the name my daughter called her-- lola...dun dun dun...("she was a showgirl" and according to the descriptions of this type of dog they were frequently used as show dogs or circus performing dogs, so in a weird way, the name is fitting.)
my kid wanted me to give her a "person" name rather than an "object" or "thing" name. so...i appreciate all the posts & suggestions; they are still under consideration for her MIDDLE name! lol!
Yay, for Lola!
Congrats Orleans, and Merry Christmas!
What an awesome gift.
