"happy holidays" outrage

Yesterday I was wrapping presents for charity donations, I had just served an ex-Muslim getting Christmas and Hanukkah presents for his friends, I wished him a happy Holidays and the woman next in line Screamed at me that I should be saying Merry Christmas because it is an insult to the lord.
1. I do not like people screaming at me
2. I like making money for the charity in this store so I could not be rude
SO I simply assured the woman I would not wish her a happy holiday. That made her smile that self satisfied smile. Like she won. But in reality in silence of my mind I wished her a holiday ans happy as she deserved which should have been pretty bad. Thanks FOX news for making more people unhappy around the country for your stupidity.

I laughed when she said I was a good person after that - little did she know the evil I wished her.

is simply a contraction of the words "holy day." So if you are wishing them a happy holy day, what's the problem?

2. I'm not a religious person, but I don't mind saying Merry Christmas in return to someone

saying it to me. If I initiate a holiday greeting, I'll say Happy Holidays. I do that mostly out of respect because I don't always know what everyone's beliefs are. I also use Happy Holidays when I definitely know that the person is not a Christian. For example, one of my bosses is Jewish. He wished me a Merry Christmas today and I wished him Happy Holidays in return. It tells him I respect his beliefs and it also might give him a clue as to mine.

4. I don't mind saying it to someone if I know to or if they ask me, but no one has the right

to yell at me about the greeting I give to someone else they don't know and apparently don't care about - when I told her he was a Muslim she said she had to hold her tongue or she would wish him something bad - so much ignorance in this world!!! If she things all Muslims are evil we need to teach her about the Inquisition or the crusades.

That's the problem with religion in my view. Each one claims to have all of the right answers when most of them are almost completely devoid of reality. This leads to many ignorant people thinking they hold the keys to the gates that open to the knowledge of everything. It creates people who are convinced that they have the answers to all of life's mysteries when it is actually them who are completely mystified.

I know not all religious people are like that. My wife is a very open-minded Christian.

Antisemitics promote the idea that Jews don't step up to fight in wars. My medic served in combat with me and rushed through enemy fire to aid me when I was wounded. His dad lost a leg serving as an Army Infantryman at Bastogne in WWII. I have no problem wishing someone who is Jewish a Happy Hannukah. I wish all my friends a good holiday, by name, whatever their holidays may be.

It's the 'holiday' season from Thanksgiving through New Years, and happy holiday(s) is quite adequate.

16. Well that's a start for my family

...but after New Years both of daughter's birthdays are in January. The holidays really get going then for Groundhog Day closely followed by Valentine's Day. Saint Patty's Day keeps things alive through March then both my wife and I have birthdays in April.

For us the "holidays" are about 5 months long.

my daughter's birthday is January 22 and mine is Feb. 4, and this year we're 'super' celebrating, I'll travel to her for a double super celebration, she'll be 30, and I'll be -0!

(i think it goes) -- that before everybody started saying "happy holidays" to each other, Christians went to church and people said "Merry Christmas" to them; Jews went to synagogue and people said "Happy Hanukkah" to them; atheists went to parties and drank and people said, "Look out for that wall!" to them.

19. I'm going to remember this and use it

for the rest of this year and for the next holiday season. I will exclusively say 'happy holidays' and when the inevitable sanctimonious finger-wagger is offended, I will reply with a cheerful, innocent expression, 'Oh, my. Happy holidays is wrong? Like happy holy days? Wait. Shouldn't we keep the season holy? Isn't that what it's supposed to be about? Holiness, right? Not merriness, for sure.' I will add, in my mind, 'so butt the F out, assh*le.'

reason I never wish anyone a holiday greeting first. I hate being yelled at, and can't always predict what my reaction might be in any situation.

So I wait for them to give the holiday greeting first, then I smile and tell them, "And the same to you".


This might be one of the things that bugs the religious zealots the most about us Atheists. We generally don't give a shit.

Hey, if a black person wishes me (an obviously white lady) a Happy Kwanzaa, I would do the same thing...smile and return the greeting.


The world is too full of dickheads as it is.

Why add to the dickheadery by making a huge stink over what to call a Christmas tree, or what holiday greeting is the RIGHT one.
