(66,487 posts)Southerners don't say 'y'all' to just one person. They say 'you'. Although, depending where in the South you are from, it might come out 'Yeeeee-ewwwww'.

"All y'all" is for a larger group of people than "y'all" can comfortably encompass.

I remember when I discovered that the NY-NJ 'youse' was the equivalent of 'y'all' - it's a plural, and never used as a singular. In fact, until I fell in love with a Jersey girl, I didn't know that people even said it in real life.
