The Dark Vicar and the Big Black Hen

There is a Devonshire legend of a vicar well-versed in the black arts. A servant came upon a manuscript left on his desk and began to read it aloud. The sky grew dark and the wind shook the house. The doors flew open and a black hen with chicks came into the room. The chickens began to grow to enormous size right before the hapless servant until the black hen's head was knocking against the ceiling. The vicar returned just then and quickly threw down a bag of rice. Whilst the giant chickens were pecking the grain, the vicar reversed the spell.
