When you have a minute, you wanna come to my house and fix the problems between my two girls?

(146,345 posts)It's taken six months, but they've been making friends all this time. Wary at first, but now they're buds.

My two girls are sisters (along with their brother). At 6 years old, they still hate each other. I blame their mother.

(146,345 posts)Scout, our tortie cat, is 17 years old. She reacted to the introduction of Dude to the house with her characteristic yawn and a stroll up to the kennel we kept him in for a week and a sniff of Dude's tail.
Dude, a beagle/basset mix (bagle), who is about 5 years old, more or less, was apparently raised as a puppy around cats. His reaction to Scout, and our other cat, was to turn his head away so he didn't have to look at them. Zero aggression. I surmise from this that the cats in his early life educated him about approaching cats with a few well-aimed swats as a puppy.
I introduced Dude to Scout on a leash for the first week, leading him by the cat. No reaction. So, after a week, I just turned Dude loose to find his own way. Little by little, he and Scout got more and more familiar with each other, and Dude began giving the cat's head a lick from time to time, to the apparent disgust of the cat. However, that appears to have been for show. Now, they've taken to sleeping side by side. Next step, which I expect within a week, will be for the cat to curl up next to the dog's warm belly. Scout is a heat hog, so she'll take that step shortly, I'm sure.
