We had moved to Michigan and Frank's could only be found in
the Philly area. When relatives from Philly visited, we expected
them to have half their trunk filled (like smugglers) with Frank's
sodas, scrapple, and TastyCakes (which, at the time, could only
be found in the Philly area, too).

Someone emailed me a picture of a bunch of Pop Shoppe bottles on the shelf at a Walmart in Calgary a few months ago, that reminded me of the monthly trips we'd make to return bottles and pick up new supplies.
I guess someone has decided to try to bring them back but now that I'm all the way out East I probably won't get too many opportunities to try them anytime soon.

As a kid we always had Pepsi, that being my Moms preference, and Bubble Up,and I really had no say in it...That's just what we had...But when I took my allowance or paper route money and went to the corner store, what I always got was Chocola...Chocola and a Payday bar was the SHIT!!!

Now, as a lover of aged Cabernet or crisp Pinot Grigio, I can't even imagine drinking something that sickly sweet. Quit drinking all soda pop by the time I was 20--almost 40 years ago!

my Mom never bought soda, but when we stayed on the Hopi Reservation a few summers, I drank Dr. Pepper at the trading post like all the other kids. carbonated prune juice was a fact.

(29,414 posts)Luckily, I only tried the mix in a small juice glass, so I didn't waste much of either.
I don't taste the prune in regular, non-juiced, Dr Pepper, but if it is carbonated prune juice, then they've taken out all the stuff that works against constipation. I guess they don't want consumers getting too "lax"

"The formula for Ale-8-One was developed by soda bottler G. L. Wainscott in the 1920s.[1] According to text on the back of some Ale-8 bottles, "Wainscott was an eccentric old man; however, there was nothing odd about his creation." Wainscott, who had been in the soda business in Winchester, Kentucky since 1902, had developed Roxa-Kola, his previous flagship product, in 1906.[1] In creating the formula for Ale-8-One, Wainscott drew upon his knowledge of ginger-based recipes acquired during extensive travels in northern Europe.[1]
Wainscott began bottling his new creation in 1926.[1] To choose a name for the drink, he sponsored one of the first name-the-product contests in the United States; "A Late One" was chosen as the winning entry.[1] The "Ale-8-One" logo is a pun of the phrase suggesting that his product was "the latest thing" in soft drinks."

(54,256 posts)NOTHING tasted better with an Ollie's Barbecue (Birmingham, AL) pulled pork sandwich than a Grapico.
For an interesting read, google Ollie McClung and U.S. Supreme Court.
It was a landmark case studied in law schools today.
Buffalo Rock ginger ale is considerably darker in color and has a stronger ginger content than is customary. Some customers use the term "ginger cola" to describe the taste. Buffalo Rock and Grapico are sold throughout Alabama, parts of Georgia and the panhandle of Florida.

(21,925 posts)I wasn't a kid anymore in about 1970 when this came out but I was barely out of my teens. I liked it and liked the TV commercials featuring an African lion in its native grasslands and the slogan "Simba - it goes for your throat." When I was truly a little kid, my parents would only buy 7-Up as if it were purer or less toxic than other brands like Coke or Dr. Pepper. It was like a forbidden fruit when we were traveling and my dad would give me some change for the gas station coke machine and I would try a Squirt or a Hires root beer.
