(54,465 posts)A few years ago, at age 24, my younger daughter set off, with no idea what to expect, to spend the summer working with the UN War Crimes Tribunal in Sierra Leone, one part of Africa that is almost too poor to qualify for third world--more like 4th world. Got sick, almost died because the local doc fed her fake antibiotics (the UN doc doc saved her with real ones).
My wife and I were terrified. She came back after 3 months as if she had just spent the weekend at her cousins' place in Washington. They manage to do this stuff and wonder why we fret. Just let them know YOU are confident they can handle themselves, and that confidence usually gives them plenty of their own.
I am sure she will be fine - this one (as in Yoda, not this child) is resilient. Actually, I envy her - Silk Road and all.

(6,154 posts)Is this part of an aid mission or is it a holiday? I ask because I love global travel but I've always had the impression that the land locked "stans" and other former soviet block countries in that area seem among the least interesting countries IMHO. Something semi verified by an Anthony Bordain video and a few other things I've read.
