What would you be doing?
I have multiple pages open, Facebook, Hotmail, etc, so flip back and forth. Sometimes logged in when not even paying attention.
Or is DU your only passion?
I'll be back shortly, cooking dinner for myself - baked taters in the oven, with chives and garlic, then steak - yogurt for desert
- taking a wander outside my bush-side house, then come back and see what y'all are doing, or plan to do.
Wonder how many got the munchies just reading this . . .

I'm a bit of a neat freak - my kitchen is always ready for the next meal. I clean as I go.
However, your menu sounds pretty good - I vary, from fish to chicken, pork or beef - baked, mashed fried, sauteed veggies - -
On pork chops, I like mushroom soup and fresh onions - - - mmmmm!
yeah,
I like food.

I use Chrome and have 4 tabs "pinned" that are always opened no matter what (Google calendar, Gmail, Youtube, Anandtech). I tend to have 3-4 others open in addition to these too.

but when I shut down my laptop, I use "hibernate" so my windows will restore themselves.
I don't use youtube - not yet anyways, don't know how. wiki I use mostly for reference to back up a post or information I want to share.
sometimes I shut down the net stuff and just listen to tunes.
As you can see, I been around DU for a decade, have varied interests. Right now, having bought the first home I ever owned - I'm spending a lot of time outside enjoying it (28 acres).
So my participation will depend on the weather - it's been raining on and off all day today, so I'm in and out.
So in answer to my own question in my OP - I'll be outside!!

(6,154 posts)Here's how to pin a tab. Right click on a tab you have open and click "pin tab" in the drop down menu. The tab will shrink and move to the left hand side of the browser with just an icon showing. These pinned tabs will allays be there when you open and close your browser.
BTW your place sounds idyllic! Where are you? Somewhere in Ontario? I'm on the west coast in Vancouver.

Here's one my son just told me about- it's not very good quality, made with a cell phone no doubt, but really cool-

If you have an older computer, or slower internet connection, click on the little gear on the lower right side and set to a lower number p so that it can run smoother.
If you view a video with a YouTube icon that you want to share, if it's posted on another site, click the "YouTube" icon at the lower right corner; On YouTube, below the video player there's a "share" button which gives you a URL to copy and paste into your post, which imbeds the video directly in your post.

I use Bell Mobility (a stick) for the internet, very pricey re usage.
Try to stay away from video and images - stopped participating in the Photography Group contests as all those pictures loading chewed up megabytes of usage. Of course there's the other part of uploading my submissions to another site like photobucket.
No landline phone or cable where I'm living in Northern Ontario, never will be. (yes, I got hydro)
Still looking for other solutions, (satellite maybe?) - for phone/tv/net.
Just bought this place in the bush - still moving in - so changing systems/providers is not a priority for the moment.
Will be soon though.

(34,136 posts)I scanned the 100 pages of photos from an album that covered my Dad's family from 1916 to 1942. Now I'm working on transferring all the notes about the pictures to a list so I can send my Dad a CDR of the pictures and get him to see what he can add about the pictures. I'm up to page 63 of the album.
Then I have to convert the other dozen photo albums I scanned to pictures sized to put on CDR, copy the info on those to lists and send those all off to Dad - and to Mom since some albums are from here family.
Meanwhile the pork roast is in the slow cooker getting ready to be pulled pork and I've got tons of household chores that need to be done...
I swear I was less busy before I retired.

Got that! - totally.
Ya know why though?
When we were in our teens, 20's. 30's and so on
"our whole lives are ahead of us" - we were invincible and all that.
Worked, came home, couple of beers, watch tv, dinner, sleep - same thing next day.
NOW - we realize, our days are numbered
and try to cram in those things we SHOULD have done when younger.
You are fortunate - some retired people don't have anything to do - job is gone, children are gone, partner has passed away, no outside interests - so they wither away.
BE HAPPY YOU ARE BUSY!!
Just bought my first home at the age of 62 - oh yeah, lots of work to do.
But I'm gonna enjoy every minute of making it MY home.
and enjoy a "busy" retirement.

(34,136 posts)"Worked, came home, couple of beers, watch tv, dinner, sleep - same thing next day." That just was not the pattern for me. Get up early, feed, clean stalls, work horses, do paperwork, feed horses, make dinner, clean house, go out and check on horses - and in the spring spend all night checking the mares to see if their foals had arrived. Weekends were shows or interfacing with our customers.
The only "time off" was when I was recovering from an injury. The only reason I no longer run the farm is all those injuries caught up with me and I am not longer physically able to do the work or handle the horses.
My parents are good examples of how to keep busy. Once all us kids were gone and Dad was retired, they kept busy with community organizations. Mom edited a historical quarterly for over 25 years and Dad helped. Mom did all her own garden work and Dad kept the lawn mowed. Now that they are in their 90s they've slowed down.
The people I've known that lived for decades after retirement kept themselves busy. The people who didn't, seemed to give up on life early. So I plan to keep busy for at least the next three decades - I want to live longer than my parents have!

Actually married a "farm girl" in '75
She left in '78 - another story that . .
I love the outdoors, physical work and animals.
Worked as an Automotive and Truck mechanic for almost 40 years.
Quite innovative when it comes to repairing things - a necessary quality for a successful farmer methinks.
As you mentioned, and I've noticed - people that keep busy with varied interests live longer after retirement.
I BE BUSY!! - so I expect to be around for a while yet.
Maybe I'll outlast DU!!

(34,136 posts)But I did my best, which I'm paying for these days! We still have the farm, but other people are running it now.
Yeah, a good mechanic would have been nice to have around. Neither my husband or I were good with machinery, so we had to pay others to do the maintenance on our tractor, etc.
I know you're going to love your new place - the spot you have picked out for the garden will be great. I don't know about where you are, but here in Florida, I would start killing off weeds this summer, even if you can't actually put a garden in this year. Here, we could put in some things to harvest over the fall and winter - except the deer would eat anything edible I planted. Maybe in a few years I will try a garden again - and surround it with electric fences to keep the deer, possums, bunnies, foxes, and raccoons out.

An earlier post of pix 2 days ago
http://www.democraticunderground.com/1018403812
And thanks for the idea of weeding - it's a large clearing, over half an acre about a 100 feet from the house. I think I may just mow it down with my riding lawnmower, never considered any maintenance until I read your post.
I plan to gather rainwater off the roofs of the 2 garages and house - the clearing is about 30 feet below the level of the buildings, so I can gravity feed water down to the gardens/greenhouse without using hydro to run my well pump. Already collect a small bit of water to use in the house rather than run that hydro-hungry pump.
Another link for you - I've grown veggies before. This one I posted years ago here in DU
Lots of pix here http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=246x10250
enjoy, and thanks for the "weeding" advice

(46,436 posts)Our legislature passed an abominable oil tax bill last session and a big move is afoot to get it repealed via referendum. I've volunteered to enter names into the state voter database. Not such an awful job except when did people forget how to print their names? So, yes, I'm procrastinating before tackling the next 150 signers.

The first computer I ever got on line with was a Digital 486 with 16 meg ram about 2001.
Upgraded it to 64 megs ram, everything from places like the salvation army thrift store and so on
Took me 6 months to figure out how computers worked.
I bought a hard drive for it, replacing the original hd of about 165mb with a 500mb hd I found at the SA thrift store for 50 cents, still in it's static-free plastic.
When I formatted the hd, I called it DAVES41150
That was my total cost - $11.50 over 3 months to collect/dismember 4 computers and assemble into one workable machine.
That Digital was the one I used to initiate my participation here on DU.
Windows 95 it was - upgraded to win98SE shortly afterwards.
Now I have a laptop, my first. - Know nothing about them, so taking it apart is out of the question until I get another one.
BUT - it IS gonna come apart
(Dell Latitude D600 with XP3 upgraded to 2 Gigs ram)
It's misbehaving, and I'm gonna buy a new one soon - -
Then I'll have a look a Dell's innards!
