That's how I always heard the story, but it isn't universally accepted apparently. He may also have actually seen this ad which apparently did appear in an old newspaper once. At least, that's what I found randomly browsing around on 'tinternet one day.

That lucky little baby got to go barefoot for the first two year of his life, learned to walk without shoes, got to feel the mud squishing between his toes, the cool grass, the puddles in the driveway...

It's all in the perspective isn't it?

it was this big goofy dog who lost his master and was looking for his family. He smelled the presence of the guy in the house, and was trying his best to get his attention,finally just whapping his massive tail against the door.

Then they faced the world together, gathering up all the orphaned animals.

See?
