Last night I had insomnia. It was one of those times where I allowed myself to obsess and let my anxiety have free reign about things I ultimately have no control over. Sequestration, climate change, comets hitting the earth, my past, you name it.
Well on my third unecessary trip to the bathroom, I looked down at my dog, who was sleeping or trying to sleep in the room just outside the bathroom, as she does every night. I noticed she was now wide awake and starring at me.
I said I am sorry I keep waking you up, I just can't sleep tonight.
I trecked back to bed got under the covers, turned on the tv sure I was going to spend the rest of the night sleepless.
Next thing I know in walks the dog. She sighs and plops down across from me.
Now I know I'm projecting and personifying which some people object to, but to me it felt like she sensed her presence would be a comfort, and allow me to sleep and it did. She was still there when I woke up this morning.
She's not a trained therapy dog, but she certainly provides it for me.

(7,549 posts)Maxie used to do that too. But starting in the spring of last year, and this winter, she's been going out and spending a lot of time sleeping on the bare floor next to her crate which is left open 99 percent of the time. Or sometimes she will go in her crate.
The only thing I can think of is that room tends to be cooler than the other rooms in the house so she feels more comfortable there. She does have thyroid issues for which she is on medication, so that maybe a contributing issue. along with her age. She is 11 which is old by German Shepherd standards from what I've read.
She used to sleep next to my bed all the time. It was nice to have her there again last night.

Like when they curl up to you when you're not feeling well...best medicine in the world.

(4,475 posts)When I am stressed and have insomnia in the middle of the night, he will get up from wherever he is sleeping and come sit next to me until I am ready to go back to bed again. Also, a couple of years ago I had to have surgery. When I came home from the hospital and spent the next 3 days sleeping in bed, he never left my side except to go eat and use the box. He was my 24-7 nurse. He definitely knew I was sick and was watching over me/doing his best to be comforting.
