licorice, and some bracht's candies. Nestles
Crunch bars are nice too. I would eat that
crap as I drank a Coca-Cola in a glass bottle in
N.W. PA with my friends. I just found a letter from a childhood friend's older brother that my
folks never showed me because by the time it
got to our house he had been killed in Vietnam
when the NVA blew his legs off in an area close to the DMC and Laos.

When my mother was growing up, there was a neighbor lady who was blind. Her husband set her up with some penny candy and neighborhood kids would buy some from her. It wasn't to make money. It was to have people check on her several times a day while he was at work. Pretty ingenious, eh?

When I was a kid, the grocery store we frequented had Brachs candy in bulk. My father would buy some every week or two, and there was always a bag on top of the refrigerator. I don’t remember any of the specific candies, except a big, pink, circular one. It reminded me of the sulpha tablets the doctor prescribed. I hated it. The others were pretty good.

There was also an old time drug store in town that had candies in glass jars. You could get horehound drops, lemon drops, root beer barrels, and rock candy in little brown bags. That was cool.

My favorite gum was Bazooka with the little comics inside.

I actually can't remember the brand of the baseball cards, but it could have been Topps. That was the most common one where I lived.

(a lifelong favorite). My sister worked in a drugstore and would bring home this brand of black licorice pieces, the bag had a drawing of camels and palm trees, I remember. Sometimes she would bring home some cinnamon candies, very strong of cinnamon, but they had red dye that made them taste bitter too. The drugstore was run by the father of my home town's greatest movie star, Jean Seberg - if any of you know who that is.

Just down the alley from my house there was an old timey neighborhood grocery store, where my kids would get penny candy. I was glad that they were able to have that experience. (They are in their thirties and late twenties now.)

My wife says she loved those flying saucer thingies. The little store by my house didn't have those, though.
Someone mentioned Mary Jane's. I liked those too!
Also, I like Good & Fruity. They were kind of like the Skittles of my youth!

They were big bars too. Just about everything for us to choose from. My brother and I would mark them up to sell to other kids who were waiting in line at the movie theatre for the summer matinee.

Most of my penny candy came from vending machines. They were basically sweet tarts, although I don't think that's what they were called.

I don't remember buying bags of penny candy. My mom did the buying. We weren't allowed to go to stores by ourselves.
She would give us a penny here and there and it was for the vending machines.
