(32,908 posts)The only musical instrument I can play is a piano, due to endless lessons in my girlhood. However pianos don't lend themselves to parade marching, so I guess a glockenspiel is the next best thing.

(24,122 posts)When I was in the marching band in high school, (65-69) there were no music holders for flutes and piccolos, so we had to memorize everything.
there werent many of us in the marching band, so I think we were only in existence for 2 seasons, or maybe only one.

(4,948 posts)marching orchestra! Violins & Violas are easy but they had these weird rolling contraptions for the Cellos and Basses. It is a site I will never forget.....its also a sound I will never forget!

(28,883 posts)Known as a Jew's Harp for the last few hundred years in European cultures, this version is commonly thought of as a distortion of jaw or from the Old English word for the instrument gewgaw. There is little evidence connecting this specific instrument to the jewish people, but the name stuck for hundreds of years.Jul 2, 2019

(1,229 posts)Im no majorette, but I used to could do some fancy baton twirling and flourishing.
Alas, I no longer have the white patent leather gogo boots.
Do we get those OG band hats with the big feathery bit on top?
Being DU, I bet we dont have uniforms, but do we have colors?
Blue, right?!

During a Chinese New Year's parade another woman in the band played Tuba, while riding a unicycle.

(9,262 posts)I did my time in high school.
Four years of 6:30AM practice on an asphalt "field" carrying a heavy hunk of brass will cure you of any rose-colored, The Music Man illusions of the fun of marching band.
(Fortunately, when I got to college, I didn't have to march to get a music degree.)

(3,759 posts)The drum, added to the percussion section, comes with a half-dozen marching, singing, dancing, chanting devotees in saris and dhotis.
A good parade is participatory without an audience; and obviously rain-free.
All join in!
