What is the optimal number of belt loops?

And why do some pants have so many and some pants have so few?

You would think it could have been standardized by now

women's jeans anyway, used to have seven belt loops. Maybe it's the price point I shop at, but I haven't seen any with seven for years. Five loops distort your belt and are not enough.
