(113,576 posts)I had just gotten home from work and turned on the news. It was such a shocker.

(830 posts)Wondered why Strawberry Fields was on the radio as I woke up for school on the 9th. Begged my mom to let me stay home as I was a HUGE Beatles fan.
All the music that the world has missed

(4,522 posts)I saw the cops take Lennon. I saw that bastard sitting on the curb.
I wasn't in NYC for 911, this event is the one in my life that will stick with me forever.

(14,942 posts)Were you a NYC'r? Just in that area for x reason? Lived near by?
I'm a born & bred NYC'r, and I visit many neighborhoods for various reasons.
When I was a kid (1960+) my dentist was near the other end of (north side) 72nd St, and Columbus Ave. My mom and I would get off at the 72nd Subway, turn the corner from Central Park West, and pass right by The Dakota on our way there. Who knew years later ...

(4,522 posts)I had 5 roommates and we were all studying for finals. I need a break, thought I would walk up CPW to 72, cut over, get some food and go back to the apt. I was walking N on CPW between 70 & 71st when I heard the shots. At first, I thought it was fireworks but then I heard people yelling and as soon as I could see 72, I saw people running. Some were running toward the Dakota, some away. In just a moment the crowd that was forming knew someone had been shot. But even after the cops carried his body to the cruiser, we didn't know who, until a cop who was crying came and told the group on the corner who it was and what had happened. I stayed there until the word came he was gone. Then, I went back to tell my roommates. It wasn't even on the radio yet. At first, they didn't believe me. We ALL ended up back in CP, huddled in the snow, crying, with several thousand people.

(14,942 posts)Being a NYC'r who knows the area I can imagine it. Yikes. And what a shock to see a crying cop!
Then you having to break the news to your roommates?! Like an emotional gut punch. 😔
I didn't even think to go down there bc I was totally glued to WNEW's playing his music, and more importantly one of my favorite DJs was taking calls from fellow fans. So I felt part of that station's crowd.
I did go to CP a few days later when they had a memorial.

(33 posts)I wish we had more popular songs like this, singing about how one feels about oneself and the world, and not mainly about being in love or hate in a relationship.
