They just grew their hair long and didn't bathe and thought "free love" and drugs would free them from society, which of course it didn't. They were wrong.

young people's backlash against hippies of their parents' generation, like Michael J Fox in Family Ties.

Hippies were idealists reacting against the materialism that developed in their parents' generation after living through the Depression. They opposed war, embraced pacifism and "new experiences of reality" through drugs. Somewhat defeatist about changing the system from within, they chose to drop out, live in communes, and get high. IMO, they were misguided and exceptionally naive and idealistic, trying to find themselves in a society that was excessively structured at the time. Meantime, many of their peers were actively working for voting rights, desegregation, women's rights, educational reforms, and political reforms through involvement in campaigns.

Misogyny complaints were across the board, not confined to the hippie movement.
