(9,197 posts)in the Philippines two years later; destroyers attacking battleships and cruisers to protect our carriers.
One thing the film left out. One of the SBD dive bomber pilots was Dick Best. He sank two of the four Japanese carriers at Midway, despite his plane having bad oxygen, which severely damaged his lungs, and led to his medical retirement from the Navy. Despite being the hero of Midway, and recipient of the Navy Cross, he never flew in the Navy again.

(17,216 posts)Also not about the sacrifice of most of VF-8's planes to faulty navigation, or the fact that the Hornet's air group in general had a very hard time of it, with their VB missing the main event altogether because they were given the wrong position of the enemy fleet. (So was Enterprise's air group, of course, but McClusky got lucky and met a couple of destroyers to follow to the main body)

(9,197 posts)It was well done, although I learned nothing new.
Their sacrifice made the success possible, as the film pointed out. I thought some might like to know about the sacrifice of the most successful of the dive bomber pilots. You apparently disagree.
