Farts are perhaps the internets favorite thing after cats. Be it videos of all sorts of animals farting to websites which contain hundreds of fart sounds, we enjoy farts. The composition and the science behind a fart is fairly simple but the humor associated with it is timeless. It is perhaps the sounds it makes or the fact that it can be used in various pranks. However, in high society, farts are considered ill mannered and only the past time of the uncouth. Consequently, a lot of people try to hold them in when in the company of a stranger or someone you respect or are trying to impress.
Though there are many theories concerning holding in farts. One says that you could fill yourself up with all that un-discharged gas and spontaneously combust. On a more serious note, however, holding in gas causes a set of problems. One being that the fart will get smellier by the minute the longer you hold it in. Farts consist of a number of gases like Oxygen, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Methane etc. Most of these gases can be absorbed in the blood stream but nitrogen does not. The longer you hold a fart, the more nitrogen will collect in the fart and this makes it smellier. Besides this, doctors believe that holding in farts does not cause any problem besides a stomach ache.

The odor of farts comes from small amounts of hydrogen sulfide gas and mercaptans in the mixture. These compounds contain sulfur. Nitrogen-rich compounds such as skatole and indole also add to the stench of farts. The more sulfur-rich your diet, the more sulfides and mercaptans will be produced by the bacteria in your guts, and the more your farts will stink. Foods such as cauliflower, eggs and meat are notorious for producing smelly farts, whereas beans produce large amounts of not particularly stinky farts.

(2,627 posts)An elderly lady goes into the doctor and tells him - "Doctor, I don't know what the problem is, but I've been farting all the time. It's not really a problem socially because they don't make any noise and don't smell. I just can't stop farting all the time. In fact, since I've been standing here I must have farted at least 20 times."
"No kidding..." says the doctor with a bit of an upturned nose. The doc says "I've got just the stuff." and gives her some pills. "Here take these for 10 days, then return for a follow up appointment."
So she takes the pills and returns 10 later as instructed. Infuriated, she confronted the doctor. "What kind of medicine is this? I'm still farting just as much! They still don't make any noise, but now they stink terribly!"
The doctor nodded, "Great, now that we've your sinuses cleared up, we'll work on your hearing next!"
