(21,046 posts)If he had been written a part that was a bit stronger, with more conflict, that would have been more interesting. Leslie Howard always played intellectual, sensitive men. Nota bene: I have NOT read the book.
Clark Gable was an example of a man who was not technically goodlooking but had the charisma to be a star.
My dad said that he saw Clark Gable act in a traveling tent theater in Houston in the early 1930s.

First rule of Fight Club.
Don't Talk About Fight Club.

(53,339 posts)The movie is mostly faithful to it, and it's one of the rare cases of a film really doing justice to the source material.
The funny thing is that Palahniuk just threw a bunch of different things from his life in there and ended up with a very entertaining book and film.
And I love Norton as an actor, ever since Primal Fear. Another film that I can watch over and over again.

Scarlett is the most useless heroine in movie history.

(10,000 posts)7/3/1862 was the day that Pickett charged into the Union lines at Gettysburg and the SOuth officially lost the war (that would be fought for nearly two more years). Tomorrow is the Anniversary of the fall of Vicksburg to US Grant.
I've always loved the scene early in the movie at the 12 Oaks BBQ. Scarlett is spying while the men are talking politics. Rhett responds to the Southern bravado as follows:
What do you mean sir? Are you hinting that the yankee's can lick us?
No, I'm not hinting I'm saying very plainly that the Yankee's are better equipt than we. They've got factorys, coal mines, and shipyards to bottle up our harbors and starve us to death. All we've got is cotton and slaves, and..arrogance.
