(60,040 posts)I use the Boston Globe cookbook recipe and have for 40 years.
flour, salt, crisco, water. For sweet pies, I add a bit of sugar, and cinnamon. I use a bit more crisco and a bit more water than called for - helps it form a ball better, rolls better, nice and crumbly/flaky.

(63,221 posts)They have excellent gelato. I ordered their new organic oak-aged vanilla gelato, but they were out and this was my second choice, but it is delicious.
It was delivered yesterday and by the time I picked it up in my lobby it was the perfect temperature - soft and creamy, but not too soft. I couldn't stop eating it. I would put the lid back on and then take it off again and have another spoonful. It was soooo delicious! I highly recommend it! It's so addicting.
I still have enough left for the pie. I only ate about 1/4 of the container, which was impressive restraint for me. I honestly could have finished the entire pint off in one sitting.

(22,292 posts)when out to eat at a restaurant whith a good pie reputation, I can resist almost anything EXCEPT coconut cream pie!!
I don't make pie very often, as I never really got the hang of crust! Getting it from the counter to the pie pan is a real challenge.
Now cake, on the other hand...

(15,033 posts)I might break out the extra dark chocolate bar with peppermint which I haven't tried yet. Or the other new one with dark chocolate, and hazelnut butter.
My nabe doesn't have good chocolate bars, so I get a bunch elsewhere on my infrequent trips outside my babe to more special food stores.
Everybody enjoy your your deserts - they sound fun!

(60,040 posts)and also the dark chocolate with almonds. Dark chocolate is definitely a daily, major food group!
electric_blue68
(15,033 posts)I usually get their tub of dark chocolate covered almonds, the dark chocolate pretzal slims, the choc raspberry, and choc Expresso baton! 🥰
Then I occasionally try some of their other dark chocolate goodies. Wheeee!
Yes ~ Dark Chocolate (usually at least 72%) is it's own food group. 😁

(15,033 posts)there was mostly (thinking Halloween) only Milk Chocolate and I liked Hersey's mc with rice crispies, or peanuts enough but oh when their then "Special Dark" came out was I happy.
The only times - and I wouldn't really think of them at other times - like Whitman's or Cadbury's Valentine's Boxes was when I'd fleetingly taste better dark chocolate. Luckily closer to middle age as adullt more and more dark chocolate bars, and ice creams came out!
Somewhat later as an older kid when Butterfingers, and Reese's came out - milk chocolate and peanut butter were semi hard wired into my brain - the only milk choc stuff in my now young adult onward life.
When I saw the Traders dark choc PB cups in ? 2018 - I wasn't sure just because of my long standing habit of the above...
but yeah, I finally tried them and Yum!
I used to get my food, and chocolate stuff, and grab one bag of the PB Dk Choc to munch on the subway because TJ's is not near me, and it was often the last errand in that shopping area.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. 🙂

(34,141 posts)Why buy a supermarket version?
I usually make the version on the Karo Syrup bottle - but cut the amount of white sugar in half and double the vanilla extract. A half tsp of salt offsets some of the sweetness.
Today I made one regular pecan pie and a second one that has dark chocolate chips at the bottom. I gave away the traditional one and my husband and I tried out the chocolate version - yum! The dark chocolate really balances nicely with the super sweet pecan layer.

(15,033 posts)great!
I have to get back to cooking before I even try baking!
Only made quick oat flakes muffins with nuts and what not like 30yrs ago.
Otoh I was a very good cook. When I get back on the bicycle for a while maybe I'll take a chance.
Or in your opinion - what would be an easy pie to start w before a pecan pie?
I'm going to pass on the choc chip idea to a friend who's a good cook and baker.
Happy Thanksgiving!

(34,141 posts)Except maybe the ones where you make pudding, pour that into a prebaked pie shell and put Cool Whip on top. Frankly those are totally not worth it
The most expertise needed to make pecan pie is how to use a whisk or hand mixer. Of course I don't make my crusts, I just buy frozen deep dish ones. Here is the recipe:
Yield Makes 1 9-inch pie
Active Time 20 minutes
Total Time 1 hour 30 minutes
Ingredients
1 cup Karo light or dark corn syrup
3 eggs
1 cup sugar (I only use 1/2 cup either white or light brown sugar)
2 tablespoons butter, melted
1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract (double this)
1 1/2 cups pecans (get pieces rather than halves)
1 (9-inch) unbaked or frozen deep-dish pie crust
Preparation
Preheat oven to 350°F.
In a mixing bowl, mix corn syrup, eggs, sugar, butter, and vanilla using a spoon. Stir in pecans. Pour filling into pie crust.
Bake on center rack of oven until center reaches 200°F and springs back when tapped lightly, about 55 to 70 minutes.
Today I used the whisk attachment for my immersion blender to mix the eggs and stuff. In the past I have used hand crank beaters, hand electric mixer, a whisk, and just a spoon as they mention in the recipe. I've had a bad case of tendonitis over the last week so decided to use the immersion blender since I already had it out to use the chopper attachment to coarsely chop the pecans.

(22,292 posts)We were planning our small dinner and I asked what he might want for dessert. I fully expected him to say chocolate pound cake as that is very traditional in our family - I take one to Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings when we have them. (not this year of course) So he surprised me with : Lemon bars ! Then he remembered how many the recipe makes so we discussed a lemon alternative - "The Lemon Thing" which is a lemon pudding cake which if you bake it in a deep container turns in to a souffle.
Next day he went over to our local dairy store to get milk and came home with a cherry pie and aerosol whipped cream. This particular brand of frozen pie is really really good. It is an indulgence to have it but I didn't have to bake either.
We always had pecan pie growing up. Nobody in our family liked pumpkin pie - I was up in my 20s before I ever tried it
NRaleighLiberal
(60,040 posts)I think of it as an adult taste - now one of our favorites, but didn't like it in my youth.

(24,143 posts)3 or 4 years ago, we had some extra pie filling that was not enough for a pie, so we baked it by itself. It was delicious without the crust, so since then, we have done just the filling and call it pumpkin pudding.
In a 1987 Cooks magazine, which I still have (in 2 pieces now) there was a suggestion on how to give your pumpkin pie filling a little twist - rum. It does give a subtle difference to the flavor that we quite enjoy.
Last year, at Costco, we discovered something called Pie In A Jar by Claras Kitchen. Just add eggs! (And the rum.). It tastes really good, and seeing as we are feeling lazy this year, being that is just my husband and me, we opted for pumpkin pudding using Pie In A jar. Baked it up yesterday, and my husband is already eating it.

(60,040 posts)a real New England thing, a cornmeal milk egg pudding with lots of spices and molasses - warm, with vanilla ice cream, it is one of the most delicious things ever.

(24,143 posts)...when it soaks in the moisture from the filling, but it takes so much more time. Also, I prefer the crust to be on the pale side, and this pie filling takes a long time to bake (maybe because of the rum?) and the crust always gets too dark, even if I protect it with foil.

(16,396 posts)It will just be me and my youngest son and he doesn't much care for the regular TG fare, so we're having salmon. He rarely asks for anything special, but he specifically requested my chocolate-pecan pie and he will certainly get one! It will be a quiet day for us. My oldest and his boyfriend are both working at hospitals all day tomorrow. They don't want to risk coming over and I am glad about that, although I will miss them.

(149,838 posts)I am terrible at crusts, so I buy the frozen ones and since we're gourmands, they're fine!
But I do make this killer pumpkin pie and fill my crust shells with it. It makes enough for 3 pies and the house smells incredible!
We cheated too, and my husband and I each had a piece after dinner tonight.
Sooooooo good!
