(64,990 posts)The first band the drummer (Jim Chamberlin) ever played in & got paid for it, was my band.
Around 1977 or 8.
I was looking for a new drummer. He was the 3rd one who came in. I think he was 15. (I was 19.)
It was obvious in one song that this kid was different.
I drove him home to meet his parents so they knew some degenerate wasn't corrupting their son. I had already graduated college, was in grad school & working in a laboratory.
His older brother was in a central Illinois band of some renown, so his parents were used to the "son as musician" trip.
He stayed with us for a couple years, then left to go with a band that was gigging even more & was a bit heavier.
I dissolved that band after he left. I didn't want to be the total leader any longer. Wanted something more democratic.
But, I heard him play for 3 minutes and knew he was going to be a monster.
Was it Pete Best?
You got it!

The Stooges weren't formed in Detroit; but you're close.

(7,507 posts)Jackson was on it. That's the only reason I knew it. He mentioned on there that he wrote "These Days" when he was 16, about the time he joined the band. That to me was incredible because it's a song about looking back, and the lyrics have such depth and are so beautiful. And he was friggin 16! Just a naturally talented songsmith.

(7,507 posts)Probably "In the Shape of Heart" because it is very personal and honest, I believe anyway, and it's beautiful.

(36,414 posts)But by the mid seventies they had mostly migrated north to Marin County, much like the Grateful Dead. In fact, Journey stored their road equipment in The New Riders of The Purple Sage's warehouse space in San Rafael for a bit.

(27,792 posts)(Thanks for that trivia about NRPS)
Brother Buzz
(36,414 posts)I saw a lot of cool, and sometimes bizarre things happen there. NRPS had an informal recording studio/jamming space, Hard Truckers had their speaker shop shoehorned in there, a road equipment graveyard of enormous proportion, and it was famous for their Friday afternoon kickoff cocktail hour when someone had a gig going on that night. Everyone who was anyone in the Bay Area music scene ultimately dropped in; Jerry was ALWAYS was in attendance, holding court.
