(63,221 posts)2000 block of Sacramento Street, right on Lafayette Park! I went back to grad school so I moved into the smaller studio over on Washington. What a coincidence!

(27,799 posts)You lived one block down from 2151 Sacramento Street, (which I walked by many times), right across from Lafayette Park, that has a plaque out front saying:
"This house, built in 1881, was once occupied by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle"
(Turns out, Arthur Conan Doyle never lived there, only visited a friend there once)
(I lived at 1958 Sacramento Street)

(50,557 posts)I did a little legwork. According to the Wiki page for the show "77 Sunset Strip," their offices were in a stylish building on the south side of Sunset Boulevard, between La Cienega Boulevard and Alta Loma Road. Both those roads exist IRL. Between them is the 8500 block of Sunset Boulevard. There is a very stylish building on the south side of that block; it is currently a hotel.
Also, the lowest address you could possibly have on Sunset is 4000.
Given that, "77 Sunset Strip" sounds much better than "8516 Sunset Strip."

Brother Buzz
(36,427 posts)It was Dashiell Hammett's address when he wrote the Maltese Falcon. It was also Sam Spade's address. My mother always pointed to the building when we drove past (my parents lived on Post way back in the day; Mom knew every landmark mentioned in the book).

(36,427 posts)That is, when he wasn't hanging out at 'Druid Heights', Muir Woods, Mill Valley, or the ferryboat, Vallejo, in Sausalito.
Pretty much the entire cast of the Dharma Bums luminaries hung at the Homestead house at one time, or another.
red dog 1
(27,799 posts)Where exactly is "Homestead Valley" in Mill Valley?
What part of MV is it in?
Brother Buzz
(36,427 posts)Here's the inside of the Deuce:
The best you can say about Homestead Valley is that it's rustic, not unlike Laurel Canyon in Southern California.
Huey Lewis lived there until the dough started rolling in, and the unstable David Crosby lived there, too. That is, until he and the police came to an agreement (the gunshot incident was all a misunderstanding), and he moved on. Dan Hicks lived there for a million years, right up until his death. All three were regulars at the Deuce back in the glorious days.
red dog 1
(27,799 posts)Dan Hicks used to fry potatoes with onions, and called it "Potatoes Delight"
(According to Wikipedia, he died of throat and liver cancer at age 74)
Also, I didn't know that he lived in Santa Rosa and later went to San Francisco State University
(my alma mater)
Brother Buzz
(36,427 posts)straight out of his Arkie cultural background.
I think it's fair to say the 'City' proved to be to much of a tease and distraction for him to have genuinely applied himself at SF State.
red dog 1
(27,799 posts)My guess is that the first place he lived in when he moved down to SF from Santa Rosa was the "rooming house" where he made Potatoes Delight
He played drums in grammar school and played the snare drum in his high school marching band.
After graduating from high school he attended Santa Rosa Junior College, earned an AA degree, and then transferred to SF State where he got his B.A. in 1965, and formed "Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks" 2 years later.
I remember him being on a couple of Fillmore Auditorium posters, and I saw him once, at the Fillmore Auditorium (or Fillmore West)
I also saw him once at The Boardinghouse (SF)
I remember him coming on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.
I think he did "Where's the Money?"
I was, and still am, a big fan of his.
(He died too young, imo)
Brother Buzz
(36,427 posts)The Charlatans were arguably the first psychedelic band
Oh, but to invent a time machine and visit The Red Dog Saloon in Virginia city, Nevada, where the whole San Francisco sound movement was Beta tested. The Charlatans were the house band, but a boatload of Bay Area talent played there. One really cool factoid: Janis Joplin officially hooked up with Big Brother and the Holding company at the Red Dog Saloon.

(36,427 posts)about his sales.
Ferlinghetti built an institution, for sure. I don't know what it's like today, but back in the day, no trip to the 'City' was really complete without a visit to the The City Lights bookstore.
Lawrence Ferlinghetti was no stranger at Druid Heights.

(14,018 posts)was arrested, I was lifting weights in the back yard again at about midnight, and I heard the gate creak again.
Wearily, I tackled the trespasser again, getting him in a headlock, but when I went to take him down, his head popped out. Rather than leaving, he stepped toward me, so I punched him repeatedly in the face.
Then he ran, and I (thinking it was the same guy) chased him to a nearby alley, where he picked up a nail-studded 2x4 and said something like, "you fuck with me, I'll fucking fuck you up, motherfucker", at which point I said, "okay... (heave, heave) you win this time but don't come.back."
