I've lived here for the last 8 years. Last week I was stung/bitten by a yellow jacket while sitting on the small back deck.
I found the underground nest opening at the corner of the deck. We have been slowly cleaning and painting the wood rails. Temp work stoppage.
So, I visited Lowe's for a yellow-jacket trap. Filled it as directed and hung it last night.
I'll be putting out do-it-yourself traps later today. I plan to use a sugar and water mix with vinegar and salt. The vinegar should keep honey bees away from the trap
Help! I love sitting outside with my pup, watching the birds and butterflies.

(16,994 posts)exterminator for that. Those nests can be HUGE and a lot of bites, even for those not allergic, can be life threatening.

(72,300 posts)I've been bitten twice since living here. Hurt like hell.
Thanks for the advice.

We had Praying Mantises years ago. Maybe the birds got 'em.

(23,617 posts)checked all over internet, this worked for me ... yellowjackets don't dig the hole, they just use one they've found, and there is only one way in or out ..
take a large bowl and turn it over the hole at nite, i used a glass mixing bowl so i could watch for activity... they will die over time since they can't get out
i left it for a year, from one summer to the next, no more wasps
✌🏼

Thank you!

(21,646 posts)notice because its been hot and we didnt go outside so much but then we started using the back area where the nest was ... got stung a few times and we need to clear that area out so other viermin do not come with cold weather so they had to go as they were guarding it with swarm in and out
flooding the hole didnt work so I went online . Flooding just makes them retreat
I was surprised as anyone that this combo worked so fast I was prepared for a battle and never expected such quick results
Look up filopril and yellow jackets
Thats the flea med
There are example online to hang
I hung it the for 2 days and didnt see any but hung another day .
the attractant is the same as in traps( that doesnt kill queen )
And fancy feast whitefish or salmon cat foods
They take the cat food flea med back to the queen& kills the nest
I have leftover attract , flea meds and fancy feast cans
so I gave them to somebody nearby they also had a problem
same results
And I was always calling them bees
turns out they are social wasps so I learned something from the experience but they had to go they were hundreds of them.
Usually I dont mess with them but this year out of control

Thank you

(21,646 posts)It matters to mash it together with food and then place attractant around it
the size of proteins used allowed for small and easy to carry chunks to be brought back to the colony. Studies also found that wasps have a preference of chicken or fish compared to other meats. Wet cat food makes a perfect carrier for fipronil
Some sites mentioned ground raw chicken . I guess thats their fav but FF worked fine
In_The_Wind
(72,300 posts)A short drive to buy wet cat food and I'm ready to start mashing.
However, I should put a milk crate or something like that over the cat food. There are 3 or 4 cats hunting chipmunks around here all the time.

(21,646 posts)of other wildlife etc. see if you can hang it up where critters don't reach near the nest and remove at dusk then
replace in A.M . since you would need new food mix anyway by then
Yellow Jackets are active in the day and i only put out a small amount not even a teaspoon of the mix out mashed and broken up for the wasps
I used the bottom of a YJ hanging trap for the strap+ surface ,because i had to buy the attractant that way in a kit. But any thing that will hang or can be tied and that is open where they can get it and go back to nest with it
One can get usually buy the attractant alone, but at this time of the year
the attractant sold alone was already sold out around here and i did take apart the trap and use the bottom with strap so it worked out
Don't forget the attractant
i used some on small pieces of tissue paper on the sides of the surface
Hung it on a shepherds hook pole with ties and put it in the ground near the nest
something like this but imagine the food instead of the lantern
i had some videos Im back home now will see if i can find them
if i do, i will post here

(21,646 posts)so a milk crate with a brick on top they can not turn over should work

if possible, post if the YJ killer mix worked for you or if you found downsides to this method if you use it
best of luck!!

(22,011 posts)Wow! I haven't been stung all summer! And I was almost immediately stung 5 times. Little assholes. I was really allergic when I was a kid, but I think I was stung enough times since to build up some immunity. Now, I just get swelling and red streaks, followed by itching.
I turn Mr. Bayard loose with the wasp killer. And that's usually the end of that.

(23,168 posts)Some years ago, they built a nest in our metal-tubular clothesline pole. I hit the pole with the lawnmower, and they swarmed out--I got stung seven times, arm, shoulder, back of the neck, head. I gave 'em a few hours to calm down. Just before sundown I clogged one end with a rag, soaked another rag in diesel fuel, poked it in the hole and lit it. No more yellowjackets!
They'll be back in the nest just before sundown. That's a good time to plug that opening.
Hope you're feeling better!

(72,300 posts)I think he was trying to protect me.
Yesterday, a yellowjacket flew into the car window while we were outside Lowe's garden center. The yellowjacket flew back out but Hal was seriously worried. Next stop he insisted on getting out for a pee. That's not his normal behavior.
I love my flowers. I hate feeling trapped inside. So, I'll work this out without spending a fortune I don't have. Over the winter and next spring I'll do a better job of getting rid of leaves and dirt piles.
Did those 7 stings make you have an allergic reaction? You must have been in a lot of pain'

My advice would be to get it taken care of professionally if you can.
Those bastards are fast and nasty. And if you smush one, they emit a pheromone that alerts the others to come and kill you. Seriously!
Be careful!
In_The_Wind
(72,300 posts)I'm truly sorry for your pain.
While I was searching for an acceptable way to handle my problem I read about those pheromone alerts.
As I mentioned up thread ^^^ I'm going to try to kill the little bastards with flea killer mixed in cat food.
I don't intend to dig out the hive. When the cold winds of winter arrive I'll pour poison down the hole for any bugs that might still be alive.
I see lots of peppermint plants on my shopping list for spring planting.
