What are some of your favorite songs from musicals?

Last edited Wed Aug 5, 2020, 07:41 PM - Edit history (2)

Or any kind of film that has a scene were characters sing.

Some of my favorites are

1. "Matchmaker, Matchmaker" from Fiddler on the Roof
2. "Make em Laugh" from Singing in the Rain
3. "Suddenly Seymour" from Little Shop of Horrors

Here are some off the top of my head, in no particular order.

1. "Finishing The Hat" from Sunday In The Park With George
2. "Maybe This Time" from Cabaret
3. "Life Story" from Closer Than Ever
4. "Something's Coming" from West Side Story
5. "There's Always One You Can't Forget" from Dance A Little Closer

I could go on and on!

I sang "Marry Me a Little" from Company at my wedding, so that's definitely up there:

Summertime, Porgy and Bess, although there is no version better than that played by John Coltrane, which is um, nonstandard.

It was the first thing I ever heard Coltrane play and I was hooked forever.

It was part of a show I was in years ago, but I don't remember what musical it was from. From an older musical, probably anywhere from the '20s -'40s. A fairly big production number. Would love to find it again.

Jailhouse Rock from Jailhouse Rock movie.

Great Balls of Fire from Great Balls of Fire movie.

My list would have been entirely different if the question was favorite music scenes from musicals.

I had a cassette tape in my car stereo (did I mention this was a while ago?) of The Phantom of the Opera. I played it non-stop everywhere I went for a year. ALW's best work IMO.
