history of ice cream?

Time for dessert? Always. But you should know the history of what you’re eating. Ice cream, for example, did not begin with the first Dairy Queen. Frozen treats go back at least 4,000 years, to China, Nat Geo’s History magazine reports. Where do the words syrup, sherbet, and sorbet come from? The Persian Empire, where sharbat was enjoyed 2,400 years ago. This history of ice cream also takes us to 1700s Spain, where a waiter in a brown coat delivers Spanish frozen mousse in this Valencian tilework, now at Madrid’s Museum of Decorative Arts.

Just kidding........

Let's not forget that Howard Johnson's was once the largest restaurant chain in America
Think you could name all 28 ice cream flavors? Or eat them?

The bright orange roof with pops of turquoise. The weather vane on top. Simple Simon and the Pieman.

For many Americans, the name Howard Johnson's evokes memories of road trips and family meals. Today, the name is most synonymous with hotel chains, but HoJo's once dominated the dining scene of our country. At its peak in the 1960s and 1970s, there were around 1,000 Howard Johnson's restaurants alongside our motorways. It's no wonder that Mad Men set an episode in one of their sherbet-colored diners. With its bright Florida-like colors and ultra modern ranch design, HoJo's was the ultimate place to pop in for a burger and ice cream in the midcentury.

Here are some things you might remember about the chain.

1. HoJo's touted its 28 flavors of ice cream.

Let's see… There was Banana, Black Raspberry, Burgundy Cherry, Butter Pecan, Buttercrunch, Butterscotch, Caramel Fudge, Chocolate, Chocolate Chip, Coconut, Coffee, Frozen Pudding, Fruit Salad, Fudge Ripple, Lemon Stick, Macaroon, Maple Walnut, Mocha Chip, Orange-Pineapple, Peach, Peanut Brittle, Pecan Brittle, Peppermint Stick, Pineapple, Pistachio, Strawberry, Strawberry Ripple and Vanilla. Which would you order?
