...while in the Air Force nurse corps. I very quickly picked up the custom of bowing, because it is done almost everywhere - stores, restaurants, social encounters.

I was there for 2 years. When I got back to the States, it took me several weeks to stop bowing. Clerks in the stores would look at me like I had lost my mind, or was perhaps about to have a seizure.

This country could use a good dose of Japanese civility right about now.
