Strachwitz owns the whole enchilada, the years are all wrong, and Down Home Music only sells recordings. I'm thinking your lady friend might have been talking about another music store in El Cerrito.

Down Home Music was established in 1976 by Arhoolie Records founder Chris Strachwitz as a (brick & mortar) retail outlet for Roots music releases from various labels throughout the world.

Curiously, Chris paid cash for the brick and mortar building from the profit from one song he 'owned': I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-to-Die Rag. Chris Strachwitz ultimately gave the rights back to Country Joe McDonald, and ironically saved Country Joe a boatload of money in legal expenses over the nasty copyright lawsuit.

On Edit: Chase down This Ain't No Mouse Music (it's on Netflix); Chris tells the whole story of Country Joe McDonald and how he ended up owning the funny little song.

Zaentz essentially sued Fogerty for plagiarizing himself.

I'm always amused that the kids from Northern California totally defined "Southern rock". Not unlike what Buck Owens and Merale Haggard's "Bakersfield sound" did to Country music.

You just know John Foggerty spent late nights listening to AM radio stations in the Central Valley beaming in that "Bakersfield sound" when he wasn't cranking up the dinosaur Victrola.

Just got home from Illinois, lock the front door, oh boy!
Got to sit down, take a rest on the porch
Imagination sets in, pretty soon I'm singin'
Doo, doo, doo, lookin' out my back door

Giant doin' cartwheels, statue wearin' high heels
Look at all the happy creatures dancin' on the lawn
Dinosaur Victrola list'nin' to Buck Owens

There is a reason why "Louie, Louie" is considered a NorthWest anthem.
It was played by virtually every band and recorded by many.

But in 1961 a recording made it's way onto local radio by an early NW band.

One died in a gardening accident that the authorities decided was "better left unsolved."

One choked on vomit. They don't know whose vomit it was, because Scotland Yard can't dust for vomit.

One spontaneously combusted on stage at the Isle of Lucy jazz-blues festival. The band wasn't overly upset about this one because hundreds of people spontaneously combust every year.

One exploded on stage.

And another one exploded on stage whilst touring Japan after the band reformed.

It is more than apparent that being hired as a drummer for Spinal Tap is a deferred death sentence; anyone who plays drums for that band IS going to die horribly and there's absolutely nothing anyone can do about it.
