The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsSpeaking of burgers, I tried an Impossible Whopper yesterday.
T-Mobile gives us free shit every Tuesday and this week one of the things was a free impossible whopper with any purchase over a dollar so I got fries and an unsweet tea to qualify for the burger-like sandwich.
I'd eat it again but not at full price. It even had "char" taste. I've definitely had worse sandwiches. But I'd have a hard time justifying an 8 or 10 dollar lunch burger when I'm perfectly happy (well, ok, not quite "perfectly" with 3 McD's cheeseburgers and and a drink for 4 bucks and change.
Even with the IW part being free, fries and the drink were 5 bucks and change. I'd consistently pay that for lunch when I need to get through the drive through and back to work but I'm not driving across the street to pay retail for it.

(12,132 posts)I usually just go across the street and have a choice of all the foods and some other things (2 sushi places, 2 Chinese places if you count Panda Express as one, a pizza place, and a Latin food place, 2 sub shops - all are good but...) but I like drive-thrus because I don't like to get out. I'd rather drive through, go park in the shade and listen to my book or the radio. My main goals are fast, cheap and then edible. I find all the big three (And Panda) edible so it's just a choice of which side of the shopping plaza I want to park in lol. Impossible Whopper tasted good. I would happily eat it again if it comes back into the cheap neighborhood.

(24,718 posts)and it was great - great condiments (lettuce, tomato, bun, etc.). I was pleasantly surprised because god knows I've eaten my share of crappy alternative meat!
Then I heard they have them at Burger King (this was many months ago) and I also thought it was good - though the condiments lacked.
Darn, now you've got me salivating! Who knows when I'll get another? They don't sell them retail. Got some Beyond Burgers at Costco not as good, in my opinion! But ok.

(12,132 posts)I wasn't even sure it was called that but I meant the BK vegetarian burger. That's kind of mean for them to not sell them to the public. I'd buy a box of them and then I could control my condiments.
I think I have had the Beyond - or maybe the Boca? One of them tasted like the burgers we got in elementary school. Which most people think is an insult but I remember those burgers fondly lol.

(62,387 posts)I broiled a couple in the oven yesterday and served them hamburger style. They were delicious. I actually liked them better than the real hamburgers we normally get.
We decided we would stick with the Better Burgers for our hamburger sandwiches from here on out.
ETA - not sure what the brand was - Better Burger or something like Impossible Burger. Whatever they were vegan and very tasty.

(12,132 posts)I'm not trying to pretend to be a vegan or vegetarian though. But I reckon every little bit helps. I'll look for them. If it tastes good, I'll eat it most likely lol.
My daughter likes Costco's Angus burgers - complete with bun and cheese because they are easy. I bet if I get some Better or Beyond or whatever we find I can have them all to myself.

(22,685 posts)Costco sells them in an 8-pack I believe. They're best pan fried.

(12,132 posts)because we saw they are building a White Castle down here. It's on the other side of town from us but I expect we'll visit on occasion. Didn't know they had a veggie burger. The one I got was at BK but I thought their normal prices for them were spendy. I only got this because it was free but it did its' job as I am now thinking about eating more of them lol.

(3,332 posts)No, not the brains of vegetarians. I'm talking about a healthy soy or gluten alternative to the most savory meat dish we all grew up with: Brains.

(113 posts)Since I had a boca burger way long ago and thought it wasn't so bad, and the regular vegetarian burger BK makes was not bad. If the price and calories weren't as much higher than a normal whopper as they are, I'd switch over to Impossible Whoppers when we eat from there entirely. Especially with the junior being added to the menu.
I tried being entirely meat-free diet for awhile and just recently went back to eating meat, but I still am looking forward to getting Impossible Burger products in our local supermarket for home cooked meals. If it can help reduce the amount even if it isn't to zero I'd go for it. The progress in having a good taste is excellent, I found I could barely tell the hints of it being a veggie burger.
My basic approach was if I could find a good veggie taco meat replacement, I could make it work, and I came pretty close xD
Now if they can just make them healthier and get some economy of scale going. Yum yum.

(5,914 posts)They taste like a real hamburger that's been left on the grill way too long.
OriginalGeek
(12,132 posts)and it needed it. I still liked the taste though.
If I made them at home I'd throw some Worcestershire sauce on 'em but that has anchovies in it so not strictly vegetarian. But like I said, I'm not trying to be vegan or vegetarian - just willing to eat non-meat things if it helps both me and the environment and tastes good.
The funny part is in my younger days, well-done is all I ever ate so well-done now doesn't hurt my feelings as much as my chef friend thinks it should. lol Now I usually order steaks medium and I'm happy with whatever I get from rare to well as long as it isn't actually burnt. Or mooing.

(22,685 posts)I consider myself a foodie and do enjoy an occasional burger. That said, I do eat Beyond Meat burgers. Cooked properly and served with cheddar cheese, mayo and ketchup, I must say it comes pretty close to a hamburger. Not a fantastic burger, but a pretty good one. And unlike the Impossible Burger, the Beyond Meat product is totally non GMO. I actually had two this week for lunch.
