The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI was made "Cashier of the Month" for March!
I work as a cashier at a grocery emporium in northern New Jersey. Not a grocery store. Not a supermarket.
I took the job on impulse last July when I saw an announcement online they were hiring.
I sailed through the interview and was quickly hired.
I started to work around Labor Day after weeks of training which included memorizing the four-digit codes for fruits and vegetables and packing bags.
I was given an overloaded shopping chart with items to "return" to the shelves on my first day at work and I didn't know the layout of the store but I did it and found I was good at it.
I didn't see the "COM" coming. Matter of fact, I thought I was getting seriously canned when I was called from my register and approached a committee of seriously-looking supervisors. Instead, they made a big deal of clapping, cheering. I got a $30 gift card and balloons. And my store photo with a paragraph describing why I'm special is hanging up front at Customer Service.
My coworkers have been congratulating me as well.
Jesus, I needed this . . . . . I was happy enough to be thanked for coming to work during a pandemic by both superiors and customers.

(38,958 posts)Good Job! Happy for you!
I was once our store Associate of the Month for some unknown reason as being in the back room as Receiver I rarely interacted with customers which was part of the criteria as I recall.
Stay safe during these times from a retired grocery worker.

(32,356 posts)So often, employees get blamed for stuff unfairly when bosses need to CYA for one reason or another. We've all been there. But when you're an outstanding employee it's nice to be recognized. You've done well, congratulations!

(9,595 posts)It is wonderful to know that your employer sees what a valued employee you are, and that they are acknowledging that in front of everyone.
It always feels good to get that positive reinforcement, and to know that your hard work is paying off.
Great job!
Enjoy this. And thank you for sharing it with us.
It's fun for us to be able to celebrate with you.

(42,770 posts)Last night. He said no one was there. No line. Few people. Checkers behind plastic makeshift cages. Does your store have pickup and/or delivery? It kind of dawned on me that perhaps things have changed and it might actually be safer to go yourself. Delivery/curbside involves at least one other person, maybe more touching everything you buy.
Would appreciate hearing your thoughts.

(45,774 posts)All shelves stocked: produce, meat, poultry, dairy, fish/seafood, paper goods, groceries
The crowds of shoppers ebbs and flows. We have an Early Bird hour at 7:00 for anyone over 60. (No, we don't card anyone.) Our store also provided online a flow chart that shows the lightest and heaviest shopper demographics for the hours we're opened. A lot of shoppers try to go when it's lightest for obvious reasons.
Our store also participates with Insta-Cart. I had a check-out last week for such an order: 3 full overflowing shopping carts, 25+ minutes to ring up, and a total of more than $925 for the food and groceries. We also will put together your order and leave it curbside for you to pick up at the store.
As far as how things have changed. January, February, and mid-March, our hours were cut due to the crowds stayed home. Then came the pandemic. I am now working nearly full time, for which I am grateful. All employees wear gloves and masks. There is plexi-glass between us and the customers. I don't hesitate to request the customers stand six feet away from me which they seem reluctant to do as they want to be able to see the prices as I ring up their order.
My guess is that nothing is 100% and there must be CV in the store somewhere but we're doing what we can to minimize its spread and impact.

(80,700 posts)It means a LOT to be recognized at work. Especially at a time like this! Management at that store sounds pretty terrific. Employee morale is something a lot of management doesnt care about much.
