Shamelessly stolen from at Michael Harriots twitter.
Ginger Ale was/is first line treatment for stomach issues for a lot of current and grown up kids. My mom sure used it.

(16,254 posts)I rarely drink pop, but always found ginger-ale refreshing and one of my favs...the other, original Coke.

(9,278 posts)Local brand in Lehigh Valley PA. Never that much of a ginger ale fan, prefer real Coke if Im not feeling well.
Im old enough to remember going to the local beer distributor with Dad and getting a case of returnable quart bottles of A-Treat. Had neat flavors you dont see now like lemon (not lemon-lime), sarsaparilla, both black and red cherry.

(13,941 posts)On of my friends growing up had a sarsaparilla tree in his back yard. Mom spied it and went to work..

(36,827 posts)When I was in high school we made it as a science experiment.
I made it with my kids when they were younger. I suggested it as a school science project and it got rejected because there's an extremely small alcohol content that's a bi-product of fermenting yeast. I told them I guess that also rules out making yeast bread.

A nurse sternly told me to quit bothering her by repeatedly pushing the call button for ginger ale.
Had she brought it in something bigger than one of those tiny Dixie pill cups, there wouldn't have been a problem.

(23,869 posts)Don't drink a lot of soda any more, mostly flavored sparkling water. But I always keep a case of GA in my cupboard for when I get the urge.

(14,500 posts)Kroger sparkling water with a touch of flavor drops with all my meals, plus fresh coffee.
But, like you, a case of Schweppes Ginger Ale in the cupboard as a special treat.
Cutting out sugary drinks gives me a good excuse to eat more chocolate........

(12,132 posts)but mostly because that's what has always been available. My dad used to talk wistfully about Vernor's and I never saw it until much later in life when I guess they got corporatized and better distribution and it's good but I don't go out of my way for it.
But yeah, Ginger Ale and soda cracker - if that can't fix it then it's time for the doctor.
NOW what I do like is a little bit of rum in some Not Your Father's (alcoholic) Ginger Ale over ice. It's nice little cocktail. 2 or 3 of them is even nicer.
A friend brought back some Ginger Ale from Jamaica - it was really spicy but I loved it. Unfortunately she doesn't go visit her family there often enough. Probably good since I really don't drink much of any sodas any more and that would wreck my sugar numbers if I could get it regularly.

(7,814 posts)It's required there. With potato chips.
Nowadays I prefer Canada Dry.
Helpful hint for the designated driver:
Do people keep trying to tell you that "one or two drinks won't hurt" and push booze on you? Get rid of anyone trying to do that by having a small ginger ale in an 8oz cup with one of those skinny red straws & a cherry. It works every time.

(22,288 posts)I will usually have one gin & tonic just to kind of let folks know my favorite, then I only refil with straight tonic. Folks I used to party with were amazed at how well I could hold my liquor!!!!
Of course you have to actually LIKE tonic.

(16,391 posts)Sometimes full of crushed ice my mom would make by wrapping the ice cubes up in a clean dish towel and pounding it with a mallet. It tasted so good. Other times she would flatten the soda and make sure we only took little sips.

(54,495 posts)Sometimes, we were invited over to the Canadian Embassy residence in Rock Creek Park for band practice.
They proudly offered us unlimited Canada Dry everything, including, of course, ginger ale. They also offered us limited portions of filet mignon, left over from the inevitable diplomatic dinners held there. Those were the days!

(21,756 posts)a limited diet following my tonsillectomy, ginger ale was included in the approved list from the doctor. Usually we didn'r have soda pop in the house (except during the Xmas holidays) because my father said he wasn't going to keep the dentist in business. So my brothers were envious and trotted the childhood complaint that it wasn't fair. I considered it payback for their scary teasing before the surgery.
As an adult, it was offered to me in the recovery room after surgeries. As the first thing allowed after the long pre-surgery fast, it tasted especially good.
I usually prefer root beer now, but occasionally buy Canada Dry or Vernor's.

(17,291 posts)That was when we were visiting my grandmother in New England. We'd always take a couple of sixpacks with us when we left too.
Otherwise, Canada Dry. Vernors, had it once or twice when I was very young. Tasted like varnish.

(31,230 posts)I remember it was promoted as "Less Sweet." Though I was not of drinking age at the time, I imagine it made a great cocktail mixer. "Big Ginger" was the name of the mascot later pictured on packaging. The model was used in advertising too. I think they had an entire line -- club soda, cola, etc. Does that sound right?
You are absolutely correct on all counts!
They were bought out by the American Bottling Co. in the late 90s.

Those of us who grew up in the Mahoning Valley remember Golden Age soda beverages too.

(9,685 posts)He brought over Cock & Bull, very good AND spicy; I bought some Goslings, spicy and still pretty good. Most recently, we tried two versions of Reeds, IMO it's nasty and wont buy again. They brew it with honey and pineapple which lends it a weird taste.
All be on the lookout for that Red Rock amongst others.

(25,183 posts)we lived in northern Indiana, and Vernor's from Michigan was what my folks liked. Six years ago, when we went on a car trip to Indiana, one of my co-workers asked me to pick her up a 12-pack, which she couldn't get in NY/NJ.
I never much liked the stuff, I preferred root beer at the time.
Doreen
(11,686 posts)average priced soda but there are some much more expensive brands that are better and use a lot more ginger. 1 bottle costs about the same as a pack of Vernors.
Sorry, I can not remember the brand names but I got one from safeway last time. They are always in glass bottles and some of them come in four packs.

(15,805 posts)taste back when I was a kid. It kinda burned your throat when you swallowed, but somehow eased the pain of a bad sore throat.
I still drink it when I don't feel good, but I add some finely grated fresh ginger root to boost the flavor. Ginger ale and a few saltines have been a useful home remedy for sore throats and to help settle a queasy tummies.
