So. Was seated next to Robert Duvall the other night at a northern Virginia-area restaurant
Well, not *next* to him as in having dinner with him, but the restaurant is a series of rows of booths, each set of two booths separated by a low wall. My husband and I were having dinner in one booth, and Duvall and his wife were in the booth on the other side of the little low wall with some friends.
Was unexpected. I used to see a lot of people randomly when I lived in LA. But the only other person I've seen in the area where we now live (well, I heard him and only saw the back of his head because he was seated right behind me) was Sen. John Kerry, late last year.
I didn't talk to either one of them - they're in their private lives, so I leave them alone. But I grinned like an idiot for a few minutes.
Anyone famous you've seen lately in a completely random setting (meaning - you didn't go to an event to see the person)?

in LA - one held the door for me and the other asked me a question in a drugstore; others just in passing and honestly, I've forgotten many of them.

Duvall is actually the neighbor of an old-Virginia (read: owns lots of land) family friend of ours -- he lives on many acres next to my friend's many acres in Virginia horse country. The restaurant we were at is just a Tex-Mex chain with entrees in the $15 range -- very low key and not fancy at all. According to our friend, he's a good neighbor and private and quiet, loves horses (you can tell he's a good rider if you've ever seen "Something to Talk About"

thought to myself that it kind of looked like him and saw later on the news that he was in town for a benefit for Al Gore (2000 election), so then I rationalized that it must have been him. Wish I had had the nerve to say Hi. He wasn't with anyone, just looked like he was looking for a bite to eat in the shopping mall next to the hotel.
Pretty exciting as here in Kansas City you only see a celebrity by chance about once every 30 years.

Mike was the **only** attendee at an Anderson speech ... he stomped and clapped and shouted "We want Anderson! We want Anderson!". When Anderson thanked him for attending, Mike offered him a lift to his next gig.
We stayed near his place a few years ago.
Saw some long horned cattle in his pasture.

I was sitting in a cigar bar/coffee place in the Quarter, looking out the open shuttered doors, when he walked by on the sidewalk. As I was staring, my brain was going "that's...that's...that's...," he glanced over and nodded a hello. Kind of him.
my daughter is TSA at Phoenix Sky Harbor, called the other day to tell me Sarah Palin just went through security, and she (my daughter) had to check SP's ID... said she had on cool cowboy boots but gave her a 'look' when she complimented them 
I (literally) ran into Sen. Pat Leahy at a grocery store when I went back to Vermont for my son's graduation 2 weeks ago... (not uncommon though to see him around)
Luis Guzman used to come in and visit his kids at the school I worked at
Some celebrities hang out in Vermont (especially Stowe where my kids worked) and they would come home and tell me

I couldn't have passed up that opportunity for some serious hassling, even if it meant unemployment. I've been unemployed a lot, it doesn't scare me anymore.

At the batting cages one day with my brother-in-law, we were met by a smiling woman who offered us passes to a free screening of a new baseball movie. Of course we accepted, and went to the movie.
It turned out to be "The Natural." I saw Robert Redford enter the theater after the lights went down; he sat two rows in front of us.
After watching a great movie, we filed out and in the parking lot I ran smack into Penny Marshall. I didn't have the nerve, so a friend asked for her autograph for me. All I had was my checkbook, so I handed her the back of a blank check to sign. She said, "What am I endoasin' heah?"
Then she asked us, "What did you think of the score?" I ALMOST said, "It was 3-2, they won," but then she said, "You know, the music." Thank the maker that she clarified what she meant. I said I loved it. She must've been friends with the composer, who I think was Thomas Newman.
I've also met Paula Poundstone, and just like when I met Penny Marshall, I was reduced to a quivering mound of jelly, saying silly star-struck things. I am pathetic, 0-for-two when it comes to meeting people whose work I like. 
doesn't really fit the OP, though, because she was part of the reason I was there (a Kerry support meeting). :/ Last time I had seen her on TV, she had the huge blonde hair -- the woman I sat behind had short, straight red hair and a heavy tan. She was going over business with some guy in a suit, who I later realized had to be one of the people organizing the event, or her agent ... when the room had filled up, one of the organizers went up to the podium and introduced Elayne ... I was really surprised to see the woman in front of me stand up and march to the front of the room ! She was a *lot* shorter than I thought. (I mean, she played a character who had a fling with "Bull" (Richard Moll) on Night Court!)
I'm glad there weren't any touchy security people around -- I seem to be prone to walk into situations without realizing it. Going to get slammed to the ground one of these days just because I can't see what I'm getting into.
in the early 60s. Tommy flirted with me. I posted about it on a Lounge thread a while back, so I won't go into it again, except to say it was fun.
My Dad knew everybody, so he was often able to "borrow" the mayor's box at Saratoga Race Track, my hometown, and we loved seeing the horses, visited there with him since we were kids. The boxes are the best seats in the house, can't be bought, people usually have to inherit them, so we occasionally saw the rich and famous. The women with the big fancy hats sit in the boxes, LOL.
Tom Brokaw and his wife were seated in a box the next row, back and to the left, so I had to pass right by them anytime I got up to go anywhere. I didn't bother him, just smiled and nodded and kept going, but he gave me a real glare, anyway.
The thing I remember was what they were eating. He had a fruit and cheese plate and she had a hamburger. He was pounding on the bottom of a ketchup bottle trying to get some out for her, LOL.
Later, I complained to my friend about Tom Brokaw's unfriendliness and she defended him, saying that he was probably losing and was apparently on a diet, too.
