The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsSo. Was seated next to Robert Duvall the other night at a northern Virginia-area restaurant
Well, not *next* to him as in having dinner with him, but the restaurant is a series of rows of booths, each set of two booths separated by a low wall. My husband and I were having dinner in one booth, and Duvall and his wife were in the booth on the other side of the little low wall with some friends.
Was unexpected. I used to see a lot of people randomly when I lived in LA. But the only other person I've seen in the area where we now live (well, I heard him and only saw the back of his head because he was seated right behind me) was Sen. John Kerry, late last year.
I didn't talk to either one of them - they're in their private lives, so I leave them alone. But I grinned like an idiot for a few minutes.
Anyone famous you've seen lately in a completely random setting (meaning - you didn't go to an event to see the person)?
kwassa

(10,337 posts)We had just gotten married and most everyone from the East coast (where she was from) sent us $100.00 bills. We went to the Trident in Sausilito for dinner. I had exactly $101.00 on me. I bought a drink when we got there. $1.00. It was a long time ago. When we went to pay for dinner, they thought we were drug dealers and wouldn't take the $100.00 bill and they wanted my wife to leave her jacket as collateral until we could come back and pay them with smaller denominations. (It was a long time ago). Anyway, the guy at the next table and his very attractive date piped up and said that if I would write him a check, he would pay the tab. I had no idea who he was but I accepted his offer and as we were leaving the waitress told us who he was.
He never cashed the check and I still owe him a dinner.

(21,925 posts)but other than that I don't recall seeing any well-know Hollywood celebrities in completely random settings despite living in southern California for over 40 years. I did meet blues musician BB King in a music store in Oakland in 1970 and he remembered meeting me backstage at his concert in Paris the year before. In the 1980s, after I graduated from film school and went to work for Dino DeLaurentiis (actually his son-in-law who was a producer in Dino's studio DEG) I met quite a few like Schwarzenegger, Jerry Lewis, Jean Claude van Dame, David Lynch, Sam Raimi and many others. They were just like regular people (although on the occasion when I saw him Jerry Lewis acted weird as though he thought it was expected). But those were people I met as part of my very modest unimportant job as a lowly assistant to Dino's son-in-law. I could never afford to frequent places where these guys would probably hang out in order to regularly see them on a random basis. From what I've heard of him, Robert Duvall doesn't go for the fancy lifestyle of other Hollywood stars.

(13,661 posts)in LA - one held the door for me and the other asked me a question in a drugstore; others just in passing and honestly, I've forgotten many of them.
Saw Willem Dafoe walking down 14th Ave. in NYC.
I'd have cried if I met B.B. King. I love him.
Duvall is actually the neighbor of an old-Virginia (read: owns lots of land) family friend of ours -- he lives on many acres next to my friend's many acres in Virginia horse country. The restaurant we were at is just a Tex-Mex chain with entrees in the $15 range -- very low key and not fancy at all. According to our friend, he's a good neighbor and private and quiet, loves horses (you can tell he's a good rider if you've ever seen "Something to Talk About" .

(21,925 posts)also known as the Newport back bay. It was a few square miles of unincorporated horse pens and old houses largely occupied by old timers and hippies, right under the John Wayne Airport flight path. At the very southern end there were some multimillionaire properties overlooking the bay, like the estate of the parents of Christopher Cox, a Republican big shot selected by George Bush as his SEC Chairman. The Heights in about a 900 sq. ft. house built circa 1900 is where I lived until a few years ago. Now I'm in Huntington Beach.

(2,299 posts)I was eating at a big Christmas buffet in Dubai when a bunch of people came and sat at a table in the room. They were well dressed, and I figured that they were either Indian or Pakistani Christians. My Pakistani friend who was eating with my family leaned over and motioned to the oldest man in the group and he asked me if I knew who he was. I looked again but didn't recognize him, so my friend told me we were eating Christmas dinner in the same room as Nawaz Shariff, the former president of Pakistan. This was a year after the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, so afterwards we joked about the danger of hanging out with Pakistani presidents.

We came real early to watch batting practice - kind of a misty evening.
We had box seats right behind the Twins dugout.
Shortly after we came in, Carew came out and looked around at the crowd.
Then he walked over, climbed the fence and came up and sat down with us.
Mrs. Lib had no idea who he was. I was star struck.
We chatted for about ten minutes and then he was up for his turn at BP.

David Brenner almost had a fit trying to avoid eye contact with me in an elevator. I saw Jeff Bridges and Clint Eastwood up close at a political event. I saw Martin Balsam walk off a set a few feet away from me.
I attended a church popular with certain celebrities in Los Angeles. The most important person I met was actually Rosa Parks, who visited one Martin Luther King day. She was very gracious and very tiny! Other people I saw there included Dyan Cannon, her daughter whose name I forget, the daughter of Dyan and Cary Grant, Alfre Woodard, Laurence Fishburne, Barry Bostwick, Veronica Porsche, ex-wife of Muhammed Ali, and her sullen teenage daughter Laila Ali. I also saw Nancy Wilson there several times. Our choir got to sing with some great visiting soloists, including Ben Vereen, and Carl Anderson, the original Lazurus in Jesus Christ Superstar, and the best live singer I have ever heard.
One Sunday, working as an usher, I escorted Jenny Garth down the aisle, arm-in-arm. This was during the height of popularity of Beverly Hills 90210, and I had no idea who she was, though up close she was completely gorgeous. I had to be told of her "importance'.
and, of course, I went to art school with some people who became famous later. The Talking Heads, Gus Van Sant, and art dealer Mary Boone, and children's book illustrator Chris Van Allsburg. Dale Chihuly was teaching glass there then, too.

(23,998 posts)I think it was 1995. My sister and I were waiting to board a connecting flight, and we stepped outside for a smoke. Monte and his wife were just arriving at the airport. We said hi to him--or maybe just my sister said hi. Anyway, he smiled and said hello back to us.
How's that for a brush with greatness? Pretty lame, I know, but what can you do?
I also saw Victoria Principal at LAX, back in the early to mid-1980s. The woman was quite tiny and thin, almost to the point of emaciation. She had two bodyguards with her.
And I'm pretty sure I saw Vince Neil walking across Trafalgar Square, in late May of 2009, but we were pretty far apart, so I can't swear it was him. He had a bodyguard walking behind him and, on each arm, a blonde bombshell type in a minimal clothing (it was a very warm day) and spike heels.
Okay, one more: I passed Mr. T, while driving on the Harbor Freeway in Metro LA, again, back in the '80s. He was in a pretty snazzy convertible Mercedes, if I remember correctly.
I think that's about it for random celebrity encounters. But I'd like to meet Mickey Mouse, some day, because he's my cousin--well, my second cousin twice removed but that still counts, right?

It turned out to be "The Natural." I saw Robert Redford enter the theater after the lights went down; he sat two rows in front of us.
After watching a great movie, we filed out and in the parking lot I ran smack into Penny Marshall. I didn't have the nerve, so a friend asked for her autograph for me. All I had was my checkbook, so I handed her the back of a blank check to sign. She said, "What am I endoasin' heah?"
Then she asked us, "What did you think of the score?" I ALMOST said, "It was 3-2, they won," but then she said, "You know, the music." Thank the maker that she clarified what she meant. I said I loved it. She must've been friends with the composer, who I think was Thomas Newman.
I've also met Paula Poundstone, and just like when I met Penny Marshall, I was reduced to a quivering mound of jelly, saying silly star-struck things. I am pathetic, 0-for-two when it comes to meeting people whose work I like.

LOL), Rachel Maddow (GREAT counterbalance to Gingrich--she even said "Hi, I'm Rachel." ), Dr. Ruth, who is an old friend, but she is sorta famous and I did run into her in a restaurant once when we had no idea the other was going to be there.

(54,329 posts)Not as many as she has had, but she just turned 84 last week. She IS a hoot. A lot of fun. And still very much the Jewish grandmother. My wife and I were with her at the Frankfurt Book Fair a couple of years ago, and she was leading us around to some of the Israeli publishers she knows, when she spied one of the stands with free snacks. She dove in, wrapped up some food, and told us to pack it into our small bags so we wouldn't have to buy anything on the train back up to the Rheinland. Always gives me a handful of her "Sex for Dummies" keychains to hand out to my friends, most of whom have two by now. Her office in New York is a 5 minute walk from where my elder daughter lives, so we always see each other when I'm there.
All the other times I met up with Bill Clinton, it was at events where we were both expected to be there. The first time was a private thing with just my family, him and Al Gore, which was VERY cool. But once time, maybe four years back, I was on the train from New York to DC, and I heard a voice behind me and thought, hey that sounds just like Bill Clinton. I turned around, and it WAS Bill Clinton. Before I could chat, though, his Secret Service detail escorted him to the first class car, for which I did not have a ticket. Amtrak had two very tough-looking women guarding the entrance to the first class car. Still, after we were underway, I made my way there, told the women straight out I had no ticket, but that I just wanted to say hi to Clinton, and that we knew each other. They were VERY skeptical (wonder why? LOL), but luckily I had some photos of me together with him and Hillary, and that convinced them to let me in, and we chatted a while before I feared overstaying my welcome in the "elite" car, and made my way back to my car. When we got to DC, the first class car was at the end, so I got out first. I had a LOT of luggage, so I waited for a porter. Clinton had no such worries, so he and his entourage walked right by me, and straight out of the station. Still, as he passed me, he turned, slowed down and waved to me, which got me a bunch of "who the hell is that guy" looks, which amused the hell outta me.
He is every bit as personable and as bright as he seems on TV, and when people say he has a rock star aura about him, it's no exaggeration.

(205,074 posts)My Dad knew everybody, so he was often able to "borrow" the mayor's box at Saratoga Race Track, my hometown, and we loved seeing the horses, visited there with him since we were kids. The boxes are the best seats in the house, can't be bought, people usually have to inherit them, so we occasionally saw the rich and famous. The women with the big fancy hats sit in the boxes, LOL.
Tom Brokaw and his wife were seated in a box the next row, back and to the left, so I had to pass right by them anytime I got up to go anywhere. I didn't bother him, just smiled and nodded and kept going, but he gave me a real glare, anyway.
The thing I remember was what they were eating. He had a fruit and cheese plate and she had a hamburger. He was pounding on the bottom of a ketchup bottle trying to get some out for her, LOL.
Later, I complained to my friend about Tom Brokaw's unfriendliness and she defended him, saying that he was probably losing and was apparently on a diet, too.

(4,473 posts)When I was studying for an MA in History of Religion at Harvard, a then Professor of Dogmatic Theology at the University of Regensburg came to lecture on Luther from a modern Catholic viewpoint. This was the then Father Joseph Ratzinger. I spent a couple of hours in a small group discussion with him on his belief that the Augsberg Confession was wholly compatible with present-day Catholic belief.
He spoke excellent English, but unfortunately has exactly the same accent and speech patterns as Henry Kissinger.
