If you haven't seen it, the best way I can describe it is "Downfall-meets-Calvin-and-Hobbes-meets-Diary-of-Anne-Frank".
So far, it's one of those movies that's hilarious at times (pretend-friend-Hitler) and deeply sobering. The last movie I watched that struck me this way was "Everything Is Illuminated".
Anyhow, so far, great movie!

(18,770 posts)Jojo: Adolf, I dont think I can do this.
Adolf: What? Of course you can. Sure, youre a little bit scrawny, and a bit unpopular, and you cant tie your shoelaces, even though youre ten years-old. But youre still, the bestest, most loyal little Nazi Ive ever met. Not to mention the fact youre really good looking. So, youre going to get out there, and were going to have a great time, okay?
Jojo: Okay.
Adolf: Thats the spirit!

(3,266 posts)having Hitler dancing around and being funny offends me - I have no desire to see this movie. I will admit, tho, that the current climate has completely robbed me of any sense of humor at all. I dont laugh at any trump memes, either. I just cringe. Things are so utterly, deadly serious right now, I cant find any humor in poking fun at trump, and Im having the same reaction when I see trailers for this movie - Im just left feeling disgusted by funny hitler.

(4,905 posts)And I would argue the satire in the first half is dead on.
And I would also argue that if you haven't seen the movie and haven't experienced the message Waititi is trying to make, it's pretty hard to try bust his balls for that message.

(13,870 posts)Charlie Chaplin did a parody movie about Hitler back in 1940... Really stuck it to him...

(2,252 posts)We can't turn off today's Hitler's and his cult the way we can turn off an old movie or a song. Remember that come November.

(51,438 posts)I really think it's a thought provoking movie. The kid and 'Hitler' are very good. Thumbs up from me.
I think it's better than 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood', which also dealt with a horrible real story.
