There are only like three foods on the planet that are so horrific tasting that I have to spit them out if I take a bite, and black licorice is one of them. I know taste is totally subjective so if you do like it I am not putting you down. But I am curious to what percentage of people also hate it as much as I do?

2. i have that bitter taste loving gene, but

i was the 6th of 7 kids. having a taste for bitter meant i got the dark chocolate in the mixed fanny may chocolate that my aunt always brought.
and black licorice is great. i got allll the black chuckles.

7. For me, black licorice brings back memories of my dad.

The black button licorice was his favorite treat, but got hard to find. I used to drive an hour away to get them for him at a little candy shop in the mountains.

When he was in a nursing home and dying of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, that was one of the last gifts I could bring him that brought him a little bit of joy. He vision and hearing were nearly gone, but he could still taste that licorice, his childhood favorite.

16. I would buy them if I could find them.

The licorice store I frequented with my dad closed up shop a couple years ago and they carried them. My memory tells me they came from Germany but I’m not 100% certain. I can find the black licorice laces but they’re not nearly as good.

I couldn't find black licorice ropes, either in a Google search.

My dad did too. When he was in the throws of Alzheimer’s, I’d drive him 30 miles north to a little town on the Salish Kootenai reservation that had a tiny store called the Hummingbird that sold 50+ kinds of black licorice. Even though he didn’t speak at that point, his eyes would light up when we got there. He’d pick out a few various favorites and we’d smuggle them back into his room at the memory care facility where he lived. After he passed, I found a few random pieces of licorice stashed in his dresser. I can’t eat black licorice without sending out a little love for my dad.

I ate it but did NOT enjoy it. Also, I really hate blue cheese dressing. I like things with ginger as a spice but hate pure ginger root. Used to hate cilantro but now love it. I am sure there are other things I would absolutely hate but just haven't discovered them yet.

I have even had Rocky Mountain Oysters and thought they were wonderful.

They all have that same weird taste. Ouzo, the anise flavored liquor, is just tolerable enough to have a rare shot now and then. Go figure.

As soon as the chef on TV whips out the star anise I know it's time to find a different channel. I won't like what they're cooking and no sense watching it.


I will make an exception for spicy sausage and lentil soup - the spicy blocks out the fennel enough to enjoy.

What Americans have come to know as Black Licorice is a fraud. In my parents culture of Denmark and Germany, what I have grown up with and have, is real anis taste and the saltier the better. It's national treasures for the Danes. My favorite is the gourmet black licorice that is mixed with chocolate and other flavors, including spicy flavors.

I grew up on Good n Plenties in the States, similar to lakridspind in DK (literally licorice sticks). I can't stand the salty licorice, and it is more common than sweet.
