I can think of two off the top of my head:
"I, Claudius"
"Danger UXB"

(5,058 posts)Downton was awesome. Way back when, I loved "The Jewel In The Crown."
And "Poldark" and "Victoria" are among my current favorite.

(46,314 posts)They got the cream of the crop of British actors, including Brian Blessed (Augustus) and none other than Patrick Stewart. (Sejanus)
Did you ever see "Danger UXB?"
Big Blue Marble
(5,058 posts)No, I haven't. Is it currently available? If so, I will check it out.
Getting ready to watch "I. Claudius, in a few weeks. I love to rewatch it every
few years. Derek Jacobi (Claudius) and Sian Phillips ("I am a Goddess," Livia)
are also two of my favorites, not mention the wonderful John Hurt (Caligula).
I so enjoy watching these performances over and over.
In retrospect, it is amazing that such an awesome cast was assembled.
I also loved Derek in "Last Tango In Halifax"

Wonderful drama about the British soldiers who were tasked to defuse unexploded German bombs during WW2.

(66,316 posts)The old-age make-up for Claudius, Augustus, Tiberius, and others was pretty good for the time. The producers were not afraid to have scenes with long periods of silence in which characters emoted without dialogue. That's hard to get away with in a very chatty time.
There were scenes with Sian Phillips' Livia that were truly frightening. She was terrifyingly evil.
Downton Abbey connection: Claudius' brother Germanicus was portrayed by the guy who played the doctor in 'Downton Abbey'. He was quite handsome back then.
Big Blue Marble
(5,058 posts)They also had breakthrough nudity. Seems totally banal now, but was amazing
then on American TV. The production values now also pale with the lushness of
current productions say compared to the HBO Series."Rome". But the acting more
than makes up for the simplicity of the sets and costuming.

(17,862 posts)But also "To Serve Them All My Days". I rewatched that about ten years ago. Also read the book. Probably should watch with my wife - she would enjoy it. We have been consuming the classics lately.
50 Shades Of Blue
(9,973 posts)(It hasn't aged that well but I was obsessed with it back then.) Imagine my joy to discover that Robin Ellis is a liberal whose American wife, former journalist Meredith Wheeler, is the Vice Chair of Democrats Abroad France (where they now live).

(34,434 posts)on Masterpiece. Beautifully filmed, well-acted. Good costumes, sets, and music. I like the dialogue, especially Caroline's lines. Loved Hugh Armitage's portrayal.
The only thing I don't like about Poldark is: the character of Ross Poldark! He's too over-the-top heroic, too often. In the books, there were so many other events happening that are not depicted on TV, so many good characters and details, that this flaw is much less noticeable.
Did you other Poldark fans know that Winston Graham also wrote "Marnie" (made into the Hitchcock film)?
50 Shades Of Blue
(9,973 posts)Actors are very good but my much older self just isn't swept away by them the way my younger self was by Robin Ellis and Angharad Rees' versions! Wanted to mention for anyone who doesn't know, Robin Ellis has a small role in the new series, as Judge Halse.
Another factor is that Ross has a dark side that I'm more sensitive to now than I was then.
Yes, I did know Graham wrote a lot of other books including Marnie. I remember reading another book of his called The Walking Stick that was made into a movie too.

(34,434 posts)looks nothing like his description in the books, but he is such a great actor that I understand why he was chosen (the George in the 70s looked the part). As evil as his character is, the actor played him with such nuance that I even liked or sympathized with George at many times.
50 Shades Of Blue
(9,973 posts)that the none of the new ones really stand out to me, unfortunately. I imprinted on the first one like a duckling, LOL.

50 Shades Of Blue
(9,973 posts)I've met him twice in recent years (He was in the DC area, where I live - for Obama's inauguration in 2013 because his wife is active in Democrats Abroad, and in 2016 he was promoting his cookbook for diabetics). Robin was just lovely, friendly, gentlemanly. It was a huge unexpected thrill to have the chance to meet him after so many years of being a fan.

(2,959 posts)was surprised to see them dramatized. Later I watched Upstairs Downstairs mostly so I could chat with all the girls my age who were addicted. It worked out well, I virtually lived at my girl friends house when it was broadcast and until their dying days she and her mom and I remained good friends. Every few years we'd binge watch episodes together.
