(6,261 posts)I own the complete Jeremy Brett series on DVD and love them, especially because they gave Watson his intelligence back, but I'm open to the new series.
Any good?

(28,946 posts)They gave him motivation -- why he's putting up with Holmes' shannigans. Martin nails the role.

(9,612 posts)The plots are loosely based on the Conan Doyle stories, but are fascinating in their own right.

Sherlock brought into the 21st Century. Can't say enough good about it.

(2,682 posts)I have enjoyed many of the BBC series shown in the US. However, I tried watching this one and got about 1/2 hour into it before calling it quits. I didn't like the portrayal of Holmes -- too Gen X, I think. The plot (if there was one) of the episode I tried to watch was inadequate. Over all, I just didn't like the feel of it. YMMV

(6,261 posts)Assure me, Watson isn't a Nigel Bruce-like buffoon in this series, is he? If you assure me on this point, I will immediate order the series.

(2,185 posts)Quite riveting: you simply must pay attention-
there is so much going on visually, sometimes while the
dialog is on another plane.
The relationship between Holmes and Watson has layers also,
this is absorbing.
Kept me quite engaged as I continue to go thru Downton withdrawal.
Now I must contend with Sherlock withdrawal.
Sad that really good television must come from Britain;
American telly really stinks.

(45,851 posts)The characterizations are wonderful, I particularly like Moriarty, very artfully played.
And they way they start the first episode of the first season will have you thinking you're watching the wrong show for a minute or two..

(599 posts)1 episode in and I can't wait to load up the 2nd on Netflix! Our kids (8 & 12) were even watching with us and they didnt want to go to bed without finishing it.

(28,946 posts)Certainly have been more poignant and shocking.
I was put off by the Watson trapped in the lab scene. Holmes by his own admission is a high functioning sociopath, but knowing Watson's war experiences, even Holmes isn't so brutal as to do that.

(11,123 posts)Really like how they use the Watson and "The Woman" characters.
It's written by the guy that does most of the Doctor Who series. Some intricate plots.

(12,723 posts)The two leads are good actors. The writing is sharp. I enjoy them far more than those lousy movies and I guarantee, sight unseen, it will be better than the new ripoff version on CBS.

(5,354 posts)I loved the first season, and even though this season's second episode, "The Hound of Baskerville," isn't as good as the other two episodes, after "The Reichenbach Fall" I can't wait for Sherlock to return.
Fun Sherlock-related fact: Martin Freeman (Watson) is playing Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit, and Benedict Cumberbatch (Holmes) is doing the voice of Smaug the dragon in the same film.
