Sort of like the pet peeve thread, but more involved. This is the thread in which you describe something odd or annoying that seems contrary to logic.
It can be about a pet peeve: Have you ever noticed that people with the best/loudest car audio systems have the worst taste in music?
It can be something about pets: Have you ever noticed that dogs love to jump in lakes, streams, even sprinklers, but they are averse to going out in rain? (At least my dog is.)
It can be a Murphy's Law scenario: Have you ever noticed that, as soon as you take a shower, you will need to do something strenuous and get all sweaty again?
So let's hear your "Have you ever noticed..." insights.

(5,264 posts)I ate the best ear of sweet corn for lunch today and the best cherries and now I am dying from gas pains. At least I didn't have a beer or wine or chocolate or ice cream, or I would have a headache too.

(17,984 posts)It could very well be that I'm reverting to my childhood already, retreating to my safe place. Or, I could be turning into the next Andy Rooney, a funny curmudgeon

(13,822 posts)but I heard his voice very clearly for the first time in a long while.
I try to keep my childhood in my pocket. I think it's good to remain in touch!

(16,331 posts)I just tried to find a clip of Rooney saying, "Did you ever notice..." or "Do you ever wonder....", but couldn't locate one on youtube. It was fun watching some of his other clips, though.

(17,984 posts)When I was little, I would play until Andy Rooney came on. He was only on for 5 minutes, and his personality was just so intriguing. He had that sort of whining, nasal tone, the big jowls, the bushy eyebrows. And every once in awhile he would give that smirk or low chuckle that let you know he was only half serious.
Laffy Kat
(16,331 posts)It was on in our house every Sunday night and my sister and I would usually stop what we were doing long enough to watch Rooney. He was somehow irascible and appealing at the same time.

(17,984 posts)the weather turns intolerably hot?
That happens every single year for me. My car doesn't have A/C. Every summer I think I'll put it in. Then fall comes around and I don't need it anymore. But one of these days SM, one of these days!

(63,221 posts)I always think we are done with the hot weather, and then - wham - it comes back again. At least now I can control my AC instead of being in a building where they shut it off at the end of the season and you just have to deal.
We have had a few mercifully cool days here in Boston where I only need a fan. I am cautious because I have no idea how much the AC is going to cost me in electricity. However, I refuse to suffer in the heat. Hope you are staying cool, ProudLib!

(7,245 posts)That when one spends the time out in the freezing cold, shoveling and snow blowing the "slickwalks" and driveways, that people actually walk through the yard instead of where one takes the time to clear the snow?
The mailperson doesn't walk in places that I've cleared for them either. I give the meter reader a pass since there's not a "slickwalk" or driveway leading up to the meter.
ProudLib72
(17,984 posts)It's true! You start shoveling, clear a section, and it becomes coated in a thin layer of ice almost immediately. Cities have these ordinances that state you must clear your sidewalks within a certain amount of time after it stops snowing. I can't help but think it would be better to wait a day.
Niagara
(7,245 posts)I've often cleared off the "slickwalk" on a very cold but sunny day. The thin layer of snow that I couldn't clear melts and the "slickwalk" is actually dry and clear to walk on.
I understand if it's extremely nasty outdoors with snow drifts and freezing temps. I wouldn't blame anyone for walking in the uncleared area.
I only called it a "slickwalk" since that's the name that you came up with for one of Heartstring's lounge posts. And now out of habit and I call it a "slickwalk"
ProudLib72
(17,984 posts)That's pretty funny. I coined a term and promptly forgot all about it.
Niagara
(7,245 posts)You coined a few different ideas but "slickwalk" got stuck inside my head.

(17,984 posts)that's when you discover you needed it?
This actually happens to me quite often. I'm kind of a hoarder by nature. At a certain point, though, I have to let things go. Within a couple of months, I find a need for whatever it was I got rid of. For instance, suppose I have an old shirt that I haven't worn in a long time. It might have holes in it. I finally decide to throw it away. Then the next week I will need to do work on my car or paint or some other dirty chore, and I will need a sacrificial shirt.

(1,810 posts)That when you get out of your car and start walking...
A good portion of people completely change societal rules and start walking on the left side.
Sidewalks. Stores. Office space. Everywhere.
Complete breakdown of a societal norm.

(1,810 posts)Very few people actually walk down the side of streets. Didn't see one person doing it on my way into work this week. Everyone I saw on the roads was in a vehicle.
