I just got the most frightening of phone calls...
"Hello, this is a prerecorded telephone call. We are calling to inform you that the Social Security Administration is filing a lawsuit against you..."
If it hadn't been a "prerecorded telephone call" I would have asked the asshole at the other end what a life of crime was really like. But the sick thing is, lots of senior citizens could fall for this shit.

(3,131 posts)Is how good an example this is of disfunctional government. Who would disagree with regulations that force telcos to stop robocalls, particularly on mobile devices with up to date technology.
Who would disagree? The senators and representatives and regulators that have been bought off by the lobbyists.
And people wonder why we cant solve harder problems like healthcare and clumate change.

(15,154 posts)Where we get most of the scam calls. So I called the Telco and asked them why they couldn't block these calls within their system. They told me that I could add call blocking to my account. I said no, that wouldn't work. Then I block a number and they just call back with a different number. We went back and forth several times. So I asked again. "Why can't you identify these calls and block them yourself?"
Them: "You can add call blocking to your account."
I hung up.

And then I hung up.
Ahhh. That felt good.

(14,275 posts)The sender claimed he had hacked my work computer and had access to all of my email contacts. If I did not send him something like $1600 in bit coins within 24 hours of reading the email he was going to send my porn search history to all of my business associates.
48 hours later, none of my associates have reported receiving a blank copy of my non-existent porn search history.

(50,562 posts)Dear Useless Fucking Scammer,
I am Kentucky's biggest producer of porn. I have been in the porn industry for 53 years. I make roughly 300 porn features per year. I work in all genres of legal porn. Every one of my business associates is in some way involved in the porn industry.
Exactly why you would think my business associates would care that I look at porn on the Internet is the greatest mystery of our time.
I would be highly interested in making a feature starring you. Its working title is "A Random Internet Scammer Goes and Fucks Himself." It'll be my masterpiece.

(11,686 posts)number has been put on hold. I do not get things like that on my cell and my land line never gets used by me but I do get the recordings on my land line. I would never fall for it but there are others that do not have the mental capacity to protect themselves from being intimidated by these scams and give info they should never give out.

(7,813 posts)I have put tags on these numbers because the next time they call, I will answer. I don't have any student debt, never did. I'm looking forward to that conversation.

(53,410 posts)I will lose my social security if I dont call the number they provide. Of course I know social security never does that. They send all their information on letterhead with the envelope also showing their logo and government seal.
But its easy to see how people would fall for the scam.
