Very little is known about the actual origins of the Catahoula. One theory posits that the Catahoula is the result of Native Americans having bred their own dogs with molossers and greyhounds brought to Louisiana by Hernando de Soto in the 16th century. As for the aforementioned Native American dog breeds, for a time it was believed that they were bred with or from red wolves, but this idea is not supported by modern DNA analysis. Several recent studies [1] have looked at the remains of prehistoric dogs from American archaeological sites and each has indicated that the genetics of prehistoric American dogs are similar to European and Asian domestic dogs rather than wild New World canids. In fact, these studies indicate that Native Americans brought several lines (breeds) of already domesticated dogs with them on their journeys from Asia to North America.[2] Another theory suggests that the breed originated three centuries later, some time in the 19th century, after French settlers introduced the Beauceron to the North American continent. The French told of strange looking dogs with haunting glass eyes that were used by the Indians to hunt game in the swamp.[3], and the theory states that the Beauceron and the Red Wolf/war dog were interbred to produce the Catahoula.

Catahoula's are a fine pet if you have time for them.

The Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog is independent, protective, and territorial. Loving with their family and all people they know well but can be reserved with strangers (this would include strange children). Socialize them well preferably at a young age. They need to be allowed to come up and smell a person. They mature right around 2 years of age. Affectionate with his master. The Catahoula is not recommended for an owner who does not take the pack leader issue seriously. For the right owner, who understands the importance of structure, leadership, and exercise the Catahoula can make a wonderful pet. The objective in training this dog is to achieve a pack leader status. It is a natural instinct for a dog to have an order in their pack. When we humans live with dogs, we become their pack. The entire pack cooperates under a single leader. Lines are clearly defined and rules are set. Because a dog communicates his displeasure with growling and eventually biting, all other humans MUST be higher up in the order than the dog. The humans must be the ones making the decisions, not the dogs. That is the only way your relationship with your dog can be a complete success. This breed needs a dominant owner who shows strong leadership.

I try to walk Cleo two to three miles a day, and she also goes to the dogpark often. She plays catch with a tennis ball while I'm watching tv/computering for as long as I can stand it. She's getting less demanding now that she's 4yo.

She is very gentle with people, but dominant with most other dogs. Not high energy like a Border Collie, though. Once she stopped chewing everything, she's good to go home alone during the day.
