The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsMy birthday is today, 50 years old
It has always been a traumatic day in my life, only a few friends know of it. I've tried to forget it in the past but now it feels like a celebration of survival and finding a place and people who love and accept me. Letting my friends take care of me was so difficult but it's worth breaking down my walls. I've never talked this way online with people I barely know... but thanks DU.

(136 posts)My mom wanted more. She always called me her "happy accident" with a big wink. She had two other kids too. She liked it when I rebelled against my father. She was a proud Mexican "anchor baby" and was a phd in mathematics. I think birthdays should celebrate moms too.

Actually, I came within hours of checking out permanently at age 52. I managed to "beat the reaper," for those who remember the Firesign Theater, and have celebrated my luck every day since. That was 15 years ago. Take it from one who is still here, but nearly wasn't. There is life on the other side of 50. Lots of it!
