It's a good thing to read your material out loud to yourself. That way you can catch typos that will not show up with spell check. I noticed a "them" where you meant "then."

I like the conversational style. The reader feels right there with you. I'd like to hear more about your family member who was a cook in a Polish castle. You can work that nugget, cuz it's unique.
