Nowadays mead has additives to keep it from spoiling and to stop it fermenting at just the right percentage of alcohol. The problem is, those additives give the mead a sour aftertaste. Sometimes it's so sour, it's unbearable. The whole honey-aroma is just gone.

I have bought my share of mead and if it's a big flashy market-stand, there's a good chance it sucks.

Best mead I ever had was from an old white-bearded man who had a really tiny and crappy market-stand and sold mead in recycled wine-bottles.
