So...my hard drive DIED on Monday. Friend saved my bacon and has me in "rescue" mode...

Got the infamous "blue screen of death." Couldn't get past it. So the short version is that a friend of mine put a new hard drive in my PC and formatted it with Windows XP. That's all that's on it...the operating system, and fortunately, he was able to get it to SP3.

My "dead" drive is in my computer, and is the one i am using right now. He said "Make no mistake about it, this drive is DYING." He spend most of yesterday and part of today getting to the point where he could even read the data on the drive and get the PC to boot. But he did, so my task at hand is to rescue my data, my passwords, my emails, my movies, pictures and music (thank God most of them are on two external drives), and once I've backed everything up, switch over to the new drive, re-install the drivers for my printer, scanner, Wacom tablet, Logitech laser mouse, etc etc etc, then all of my software. I don't have the luxury of treating this as a "dedicated" task...I lost two business days and that's going to really cut into what I need to accomplish by the end of the week. So it could take a week...or more...to get everything back to "normal" via the new drive.

BUT...thanks to my friend...

1). I DO NOT have to buy a new computer (he is billing me for his services).

2). I DID NOT lose my data, emails, passwords, etc.

The glass is DEFINITELY half full today, NOT half empty.

Had that happen last summer. Glad your friend was able to save the data. bluesbassman May 2012 #1
