contributing to the second heat-related death in three days and causing the National Weather Service
to issue a heat advisory through the early evening for the southwestern part of the state.
The high hit 105 degrees, making it one of the earliest days to reach 105 since the late 1800s.
Tucson doesnt usually feel that kind of heat until June, said John Glueck, a NWS forecaster.
The heat contributed to the death of a 35-year-old German tourist hiking in
Saguaro National Park West Monday afternoon.

(55,027 posts)83 on the porch (I'm headed out there!) I got overheated on Saturday, slept almost all day yesterday. Barely got up to go check out the eclipse (and stupidly drank a bottle of wine) so today wasn't very productive either. Did make it to town for hay and groceries but that was about it. Ugh, HOT.

(6,206 posts)Thank goodness for air conditioners. Keeping the house at 80.

(30,947 posts)It is already 80 degrees outside now. It is supposed to be in the 90s this weekend. If it is this hot this early in the year, summertime is going to be hell.

(5,364 posts)I'm one of those who thinks anything warmer than the high side of what would be considered room temperature too hot for me. I keep the A/C at 69 or 70 till it gets really hot and uneconomical; at which point I'll make a sacrifice and keep it at 73 or 74, at least it keeps the humidity in check.
I work mostly outside on concrete and sweat and suffer terribly in the summer even though I'm lean and fit. Coming home to a cool house is my reward.
I butt heads with people that keep their houses at 80. They always say "It feels cool compared to 95 degrees". Well yeah; come in from a muggy 96 degree day and 80 feels cool......for about 5 minutes.
ChazII
(6,206 posts)two more hours. What is the humidity where you live? As we joke in Phoenix, "It's a dry heat." Muggy is something we don't have very often - only after a rain. And with an average of 4 inches of rain a year, muggy is rare.

(5,364 posts)Dewpoints usually in the upper 60's or low 70's. Basically means, say an 86 degree day, unless you're in a breezy shade your clothes get wet with sweat. It's like trying to breathe molasses. Very uncomfortable. The only real relief you get is during one of the numerous thunderstorms when the temps can go from 96 to 70 in minutes. Of course if it passes much before sundown, once it clears and the sun pokes through and all that ground water begins to evaporate, the super high humidity is like being in Sumatra or wherever. UGH!!
I've experienced "dry heat" in California and Arizona. In the sun you feel hot, no two ways about it. In the shade, especially with even the slightest of breezes, it feels deceptively cool. I remember once I was at a party/BBQ once in Arizona under an overhanging roof patio. I heard it was 91 degrees and I said "No way!" felt like it was 65 or something.

I've lived down South, on the East coast, Midwest, and worst of all -- D.C.

My body's never dealt well with humidity. When I was 18 years old, in GREAT shape (though somewhat
underweight), we would go for 2-mile runs in the Army outside of San Antonio, TX. The guys in front
of me would have little triangles of sweat at the bottoms of the backs of their t-shirts -- you could
wring out MY whole shirt like a washcloth.

I'm convinced that moving to this climate added years to my life (though, being immortal... that's kinda
moot, innit?

Low Humidity helps the swamp cooler keep it at 79°F indoors.

(3,622 posts)we lived in Tucson from 1986 to 1988. My wife did her post-doc at UofA. It really gets hot in the summer. We used to play tennis at 6:00 AM and by 8:00 AM it was too hot! Once the sun set we were back on the tennis courts. The only down side was monsoon season. We had to sweep the courts to get rid of the Colorado river toads! The hottest we saw in Tucson was 115 F.

(8,492 posts)I was just outside and it didn't feel too bad. They said it was supposed to get to 95° today in Prescott. That's way friggin' hot for this town even for mid-summer. We usually hang in the upper 80's or so.

(426 posts)AKA the California high desert, it's 102 on my west-facing front porch. But, with the swamp cooler on, it's a comfortable 76 inside the house.
I agree it's gotten much hotter, much sooner, than I've seen it around here in ages. We're getting July weather in May. I don't usually have to set up the cooler until the beginning of June. Not so this year!

Walking around town the last few days, I have come to appreciate a THICK silver lining in that cloud.

Other than for 2-3 cumulative hours transferring (way too fucking soon and often) in a hot medical
transport van... I spent from mid-May to mid-August in amazing and wonderful A/C 24/7 (and my
insurance company covered THAT utility bill, so to speak).
