Family Kicks Pregnant Cat Out Of House Because They Got Dogs

She showed up at her favorite neighbor's house asking for help ❤️️

By Caitlin Jill Anders

When Grace Redmon and her dad first met Athena, the cat was living two doors down from Redmon’s dad with another family. She would often leave her house to play outside, and would spend a lot of time in Redmon’s dad’s backyard, watching birds and getting attention from her favorite neighbor.

“She was very friendly and my dad would feed and pet her, so she would come around more often, especially right as he got home from work,” Redmon said. “She would be right outside his door waiting when he pulled in.”

About 10 months ago, Athena’s family got two dogs who didn’t get along with their new cat sister very well — and so Athena was kicked out of her house and forced to live outside.

Confused and heartbroken, Athena began sleeping under her neighbor friend’s porch, and he soon began to notice signs that she might be pregnant.

“It was hard to tell, though, since she was so skinny,” Redmon said.

One day, Redmon’s dad heard tiny meows coming from under his porch, but when he went to try and find Athena and her kittens, he couldn’t get to them. Athena had them very well-hidden, and Redmon’s dad was at a bit of a loss of what to do.

After several weeks had gone by, Redmon’s dad went outside into his yard …

… and was shocked to see Athena and three little kittens, going for a stroll together. He quickly took a picture for his daughter, who is an avid animal lover, and she immediately offered to come over and help him catch them all and bring them inside.

At first her dad was reluctant, as he already had two senior cats and he wasn’t sure how they would react to a family of kittens. Redmon had no room in her own house either, but she convinced her dad they needed to get the little family inside so they could be properly cared for.

Redmon was able to work with a rescue to get the entire family spayed or neutered and vaccinated, and she kept them in her dad’s huge basement at first before slowly introducing them to the other cats in the house. She named the kittens Zeus, Artemis and Apollo, and even though he didn’t want to admit it, her dad slowly began to fall in love with all three of them.

Unfortunately, Redmon was unable to adopt the little family herself because she already had too many cats in her home, so she knew the only way to keep them in the family was to convince her dad that they had already found the forever home they were meant to be in.

snip

Finally, Redmon’s dad realized that he loved all four of the new additions to his home, and admitted to himself and to his daughter that they had found where they belonged.

The little family has been in their new home for about six months now, and none of them could be any happier if they tried. The senior cats who already lived in the house love taking care of their new kitten grandchildren, and everyone is just so content — especially Athena.

“She still likes to look out the back to watch birds, but otherwise she is often on my dad’s lap sleeping or following him around the house,” Redmon said. “Athena is now a happy and healthy sweetheart — she didn’t lose any of her friendliness in the whole transition.”

And good mojo to the neighbors for making it a happy outcome!

House cats and dogs. If you have patience. Slowly introduce them. Very rare that pets don't eventually learn that that ugly furry new member to the family is a part of the tribe.

But anyways, at least she's now found a forever home.

... bored and done with that,.. toss it to the curb and sink your claws into your next victim who will eventually see the same ugly result soon enough.

What creeps the neighbors are who tossed the kitty for the new dogs. Hope they have no children in that household so a new generation does not learn the tricks of the trade pertaining to the arts of selfishness absent a speck of compassion.

Please do not breed and contaminate the world further with your DNA.

... I will never understand how people can be so heartless as to discard or disrespect an animal in such a way. Some people treat animals like chattel, as if they have no feelings, and worse yet, in an arrogant (I decide how your life is going to be) way. We are the caretakers. We are the nurturers .. or should be. Whether you believe in God, a higher power or whatever, I believe it is our responsibility to care for the less fortunate, less able and lesser species among us (although I happen to think the kittehs may be up a rung or two on us). I'll bet these imbeciles would discard the dogs as well if they had a child, or an allergy, or a hangnail. Thank you to these wonderful folks who gave mama and her babes a new, loving and SAFE home.

Her babies are all cute, too. Glad they found their forever home, all together. How anyone could kick out something with a sweet face like that is beyond me. Blessing in disguise as it turns out. Athena knew where the good guy lived.

I personally think that all animals / pets are a heck of a lot smarter than what some people give them credit for. They (the animals/pets) can sense a heck of a lot more about people then is realized.

cat from a couple that said they were expecting and thought the cat would hurt the baby, he was "territorial". First night we had him he curled up around our daughter's back (she has scoliosis and was uncomfortable) later on we had another baby and he was perfect with the baby. Also, if he was 'territorial' it showed in how he protected me from big dogs. Anytime I was in the yard and a big dog came nearby, he went into protection mode. Beat up a dog once with me nearby, chased off the dog. LOVED that cat, miss him. He sits in heaven now, I am sure.

I recently got into a strong disagreement with my sister who thinks it is just fine to have a cat and make it live outdoors. Somehow she's oblivious to what is wrong with that. Luckily, she is highly unlikely to get a cat (or a dog for that matter) and I sincerely hope that unless she understands they should really be inside, she never does.

Too many people are heartless about our feline and canine companions. They won't get them spayed or neutered, and then are quite surprised when they turn up pregnant.

And it's the fault of the original human owners that the new dogs didn't get along with the already present cat. It can take time, but there are ways to introduce the various animals to each other.

because he howled and sprayed (a problem that could have been solved easier if they'd neutered him). I kept seeing the poor little bugger out in the snow, and I couldn't stand it anymore so I took him in and kept him - for 20 years.

Appeared to enjoy our house more after our neighbor got their second door. He still went home but spent lots of time at our house.
He would sneak downstairs to sleep in our basement. My cats accepted him and they would team up against the bully cat across the street.
I had had back surgery and woke up from a nap one day to find him sleeping on my stomach.
We really enjoyed him.

had spayed & she had many kittens. They also had a yappy dog and kids, so the cats would hang out on our porch just to take a break from the chaos. We had cats ourselves, but ours were indoor only, so it was no big deal. It got to the point where their cats were spending all their time at our place. We tried talking to the neighbors about spaying & neutering their cats & low cost programs, even to the point of offering to pay for it but they just ignored us. So we started catnapping them & having them spayed/neutered. I don't think they even noticed. Eventually the neighbors were foreclosed on. They took yappy dog and the kids but left all of their cats behind. We had three indoor-only cats, but there were 9 homeless cats. What to do. It's a good thing we had a large house, because it certainly was fun after we took all of them in.

We all lived happily ever after. We lost the last of the family on New Year's Day 2013. Junior was 23. I still miss that family of cats--they were magnificent.

I have a house full of cats and dogs too. We were at the vets this morning. We had to put our 18 year old cat down. We are sad, but definitely not lonely. We still have an 8 year old semi- feral and 3 young cats under 2 who came from a feral in our neighborhood. We also have a 4 year old male that lives in our carport. He doesn't like the dogs, so he stays outside. We trapped all the strays that came around and got them all fixed with rabies shots etc. I needed this story today of all days. Thanks for posting!

It is difficult, but I prefer this to having them disappear. We had two take off for parts unknown in the last year. They do have microchips though, so we still hold out hope. 18 is a long life for a cat and death was welcome today. She was starting to suffer and stopped eating yesterday. She went peacefully, so this is the best possible outcome that anyone could hope for in this world. Some pain is worth having because it lets you know that you are truly living.

The only time our furry family members are capable of breaking our hearts is when it's time for them to leave us. Again, I'm so, so sorry.
