Post a song with a punch line or twist at the end.

I got to thinking about this while listening to a favorite, Dixie Chicken.

“And all the boys there at the bar began to sing along...”

There are others I can think of, all of which tell a story.

Paradise By the Dashboard light. “And now I’m praying for the end of Time...”

Lola. “Now I’m not the world’s most physical man, but I know who I am and in bed I’m a man, and so’s Lola...”

The Scotsman. “My friend, I don’t know where ya been but I see you won first prize!”

Others? I have a soft spot for a story and a twist.

4. Wildwood Weed

The wildwood flower grew wild on the farm,
And we never knowed what it was called.
Some said it was a flower and some said it was weed,
I never gave it much thought
One day I was out there talking to my brother,
Reached down for a weed to chew on,
Things got fuzzy and things got blurry,
And then everything was gone!
Didn't know what happened,
But I knew it beat the hell out of sniffin' burlap.

(snip)

All good things gotta come to an end,
And it's the same with the wildwood weed.
One day this feller from Washington came by,
And he spied it and turned white as a sheet.
Then they dug and they burned,
And they burned and they dug,
And they killed all our cute little weeds.
Then they drove away,
We just smiled and waved
Sittin' there on that sack of seeds!

A short one. It sounds like it's final, relationship-ending, telling off...

I've always loved the guitar solo after the lyrics. So simple and beautiful and mellow.

Lizards was my first thought, but it's pretty dense (and only one section of the long story it's in). Phish seems to be one of those bands people either love or cannot stand. Not much middle ground to be found, there.

She gives all these examples of irony (sort of) that are quirky, then in the last verse she sings this “example” in a more hushed tone:
It's meeting the man of my dreams
And then meeting his beautiful wife

... the whole song led up to that little disclosure.

While walking through a crowd I
Noticed a face that passed by
I turned to get a second view

I thought before proceeding
Her looks could be misleading
Still had to know if it was true

I cried your name so clearly
That everyone could hear me
And then I knew it wasn't you

Such a great song by:
The Bobby Fuller Four....circa mid 1960’s.

Whoa, tie a yellow ribbon 'round the ole oak tree
It's been three long years, do you still want me?
If I don't see a ribbon round the ole oak tree
I'll stay on the bus, forget about us, put the blame on me
If I don't see a yellow ribbon 'round the ole oak tree..

Now the whole damned bus is cheerin'
And I can't believe I see
A hundred yellow ribbons round the ole oak tree
I'm comin' home..
