The Clash didn't last as long but I pick them because I was 20 when they released their first Album in 1977. What is everyones opinion if The Clash with Joe Strummer and also with Mick Jones would have lasted at least for another 6 years. Just Curious and why?

(2,843 posts)I pick the Stones for their longevity, song quality and persistent influence on modern music.

(17,984 posts)But you are also trying to get me to compare 60s to 70s/80s, pure rock to punk. I'm going with The Clash because they were more my generation and a greater influence on me. Do you remember BAD? I still get this song stuck in my head every now and again:

I still wish Joe Strummer was there. I miss Joe.😢 Just as much as I miss Benjamin Orr from The Cars 😥.Now that's whole different post Ben or Ric as Lead Singer.

(2,252 posts)The Who really rocked my boat. Can't see the other two bands recording a rock opera masterpiece and making it sell.

(27,101 posts)Maybe I'm just a product of my own generation, but the Who has always been just irritating to me, musically.
The Rolling Stones could be a threat, but they were HORRIBLE in the 80s and haven't produced anything of interest in decades. They ran out of creativity.
All the members of the Clash (particularly Mick Jones) kept on making great music.
Bottomless talent, there.

(53 posts)lasted as long as it could. Jones was moving toward beats and away from where Joe wanted to go. I don't think Mick was a forceful personality and was stoned much of the time. There was also some manager manipulation going on. There a few very good documentaries out there. I would not consider Clash in the same league as Who or Stones. Not enough music although London Calling is as good as it gets.

(2,067 posts)better and what direction they would have gone in musically. I knew they had Musical and Political differences around the time Combat Rock came out in 1982. But I didn't know that Mick Jones had a drug problem. Was it Cocaine because I grew up in the 1980's I knew personally how it was? Or was it Heroin I hope not?

(53 posts)see if you can find it. Their manager Bernie Rhoads was a severely negative influence. Mick comes off as smoking a lot of grass (not a particularly awful thing) but he was just out of it, very passive and they kicked him out. They could not have gone any further.

(15,320 posts)Seeing them live in the 70s was "life-changing". By the end of their show, you were drenched in sweat, head-pounding, heart-pounding, couldn't hear straight for a week.
They would take the stage and it would be like a frickin' bomb exploded. There was some banter with the audience between songs, but for the most part, they were just fucking relentless.
Saw them in 2013 on the Who Hits 50 Tour and have a great close-up picture of blood splatter on Pete's guitar, where at age 70, he still played the guitar like he was at war with it. Their version of Bargain here in this performance is virtuoso stuff.
Base, Drums, Guitar and Vocals, I would put them individually up against any musician....then again, my DU name is "maxrandb"

(3,411 posts)Their music is subversive, against the establishment yet optimistic. Just my opinion but it speaks to me. Especially in this current period of world turmoil.
