She is 17 and lives with here grandmother now . She was a cutter in early highschool and i let her move in with her grandmother since she found living with a single father was not helping her deal with her demons. She has since found a boyfriend and and they are a good match. I see her about 2 times a month , but feel kind of left out of her life. this saddens me ,so i have spent hours thinking about it and trying to get my feelings on paper. This is a poem i wrote and i would like to give it to her.but havnt yet.
Why , a poem for Sierra
The river to the ocean, returns again as rain.one cycle completed, it`s not hard to explain. These cycles and seasons, the links that we see,as spring links to summer ,you`re linked to me.Go up in the mountains, and give a great shout.Ask the question,it should be worn out.Why earth? Why oceans? Why forests, and seas? Why children? Why Loving?why you,and why me?These questions are unanswered, and always will be.Acceptance of life just might be the key.A rose ,and an Orchid are different, yet same.Dont fault the roses thorns, its`not to blame. We`re created so different ,but when we can,we need to accept this may be part of gods plan.Think of the pain that might go away,if the world could accept this starting today.Dont fault me or grade me,i`m not on your scale.Your units of measure are different and so.....Just love ,and accept we`ve a long way to go.We`re different, thats certain, and always will be,yet we`ve been carved from the very same tree.

(110,159 posts)it is so beautiful. i love so much of it, but most.... i love that you have been thinking about her so much, and put the words on paper, for her to see.
children, even at 17, need this.
i hope she will always treasure and pull it out when she needs to hear it again
and there you will be, with her, each and every time.

The story behind it, with the emotions wrapped in words .... made me teary-eyed.
Very expressive...
As seabeyond said, it's a treasure ....
She will keep it forever ...
Best wishes to both of you...
peace & love~

(33,047 posts)if my father had let me know he loved me then, it would have made so much difference. keep a pristine copy in your effects for her later....she will wear out the first one.

(23,272 posts)We need to say it alot and in as many different ways as we can.
Your poem is beautiful. Please give it to her now instead of holding onto it for "later". Who knows? She may even give you a hug in return. Here's a hug for you and don't stop trying to reach out to her and tell her how much you miss her, love her, want to be a part of her life.
There's another DUer, a young woman who said something very profound to me a few weeks ago - sometimes as a parent I've despaired and she said that she felt like her parents gave up on her. That they stopped caring and trying to help. That it would have mattered to her knowing that her parents were never going to give up on her and that she was loved unconditionally even through the bad stuff.
So continue to keep reaching out to her in every way possible, especially with beautiful poems.

(8,492 posts)17. What a horrible age to be. She needs her dad. Especially a dad that loves her so much.
Give her this and then, do stupid things for her. Take her to the zoo, the museum, art shows, whatever. Send her flowers for no reason at all. She may rebel a bit, but let her know that it's important to you.
Remember, a father is a little girl's first love.

(374 posts)Don't wait to give it to her. I'm sure it would do her good to have that poem now.

(6,388 posts)Isn't that the nature of that age?
But I also think that EVERY 17 yo would cherish this poem... whether they would admit it now or not.
I was never estranged from my Dad... so I can't totally relate... but I moved out of state when I was in my early twenties and my Dad used to write me a letter every week. I'm 57 and still have those letters.
eta: I vote to give it to her now!!!
