(27,802 posts)Chuck Berry wrote the lyrics while he was in prison for violating the Mann Act.
The melody he used was from the song "Wabash Cannonball"
The Grateful Dead performed the song live 425 times.
Elvis' version is the best version, imo.
[It's on the soundtrack of "Men in Black"]

(27,802 posts)didn't get to go.
But, one week before his scheduled concert at the Civic Auditorium, Alan Freed had a rock concert featuring everybody BUT Elvis.
There must have been 25 acts.
So many acts that each one only got about 5 minutes to play.
I remember some of them:
- Buddy Holly
- Ritchie Valens
- The Big Bopper
- The Coasters
- The Drifters
- The Platters
- The Ronnettes
- The Chiffons
- Paul Anka
- Eddie Cochran
- The Del Vikings
- Chuck Berry
and many, many more
(But, I would have rather seen Elvis)

(27,802 posts)I'm not really a fan of Joan Baez.
I like her as a person, but I just don't particularly like her voice.
As far as Percy's Song goes, imo, Sandy Denny of Fairport Convention sings that song like an angel.
She had a truly great voice.
