My wife and I decided that we needed a little day trip away from the house for a bit and headed out to Hueston Woods State park which is about a half hour from our house. It didn't cost us a thing except for a little gas. Here are some photos my wife took while we were there.
The path back to a bird blind.
Me on a small bridge over a marsh on the trail back to the bird blind.
The bird blind.
A picnic area on a hiking trail.
A part of the trail we hiked. It was more like a dirt road for a short stretch.
A pretty creek.
Could it be that the road to nowhere...
...leads to me?

Thanks for the great photos!
That park reminds me of the place where we used to take our Lab walking every Sunday a few years ago. I can just smell the fresh air.

Nice day!
Yeah, we don't live too far from Miami U. I hear it's a really good school, considered to be a part of a Ivy League of the Midwest. My wife used to go to Oxford quite a bit with friends.

(10,418 posts)It seems spring is barely shaking off winter in your neck of the woods.
In the past week or so the leaves have really started to come out. We had an unusually cold April. It snowed here in mid-April. Were usually done with that stuff by the end of March.

(17 posts)Your post sent many long lost memories flooding through my head. I lived off campus while attending Miami University in a small town called Morning Sun Ohio which was right next to Houston Woods State Park. Springtime after a long winter I would hike these trails every morning before my eight AM class . Alone on these trails with spring bursting out like gangbusters was a wonderfull moment. This was the time of Kent State. Students and the Butler County Sheriffs department with their dogs and nightsticks on the Miami University campus. The streets in Oxford were chaotic but the trails in Houston woods were Zen like. These moments in the woods kept me sane. Thanks for the memories.

(10,418 posts)My wife and I are going hiking again today if it doesn't rain on us. We are going to go to Brookville Lake in Brookville, Indiana.
I currently reside in Richmond, Indiana, but I grew up and lived most of my life until about 7 years ago in Dayton, Ohio.

(17,112 posts)One of his friends told us we could collect fossils there and park policy at the time allowed people to take fossils for their personal use. We didn't find any trilobytes, but we found a bunch of horn corrals, and slabs of stone embedded with shells and other fossils. We still have our samples in the yard. We had a good time and always wanted to go back. Thanks for the trip down memory lane

(10,418 posts)I don't know if they still have that policy. I'll have to check into it the next time we go back. I used to like looking for fossils when I was a kid.

(17,112 posts)and the creek bed was exposed. We looked there, didn't do any digging away from the creek. The creek bed was pretty much lined with fossil-bearing limestone.
We had a bag of tools and our little dog with us. We left our tools and took a break walking our dog. We looked back and saw another rockhound looking at our bag. When he started to pick it up, John called out and said, 'Those are ours!' The guy looked abashed and said he thought someone had left them there. We didn't leave them lay after that.
